Let's see now...I saw a dash 4 (I think a dash 4) at a local shop on Tuesday for $695...beautiful 8 3/8" but with no box & Houge grips.

This was in South KC.

I did not buy it...I thinks he's about $150 high....but I'd still like to see it a bit lower.

i might go as high as 600, just my opinion.

Sounds too high to me. They were not a very popular model. Expensive ammo and very loud. Any gains you would get with a .22 mag from a handgun is minimal with all the hot .22LR on the market from a more popular model 17 or 18. Maybe a rimfire collector would pay that - but not me.

I agree with Bob on the value of a 48-4. If it's a true Model 48 (pre-revision), it might be worth $700. If it's a Model 48-1, I think it's worth a good bit more.

S&W chad, explain why a 48-1 is worth " a good bit more" ?

I've heard that one was found, but don't know if it's been verified. Extremely rare, if it even exists.

A year or two ago I snagged a NIB 48-4 long barrel for $ 500 from my FFL/pawn shop. I might have gotten a little break due to how much business I do there and of course S & W's haven't gotten any cheaper since then so I'd say something north of $ 500.

$ 700 seems excessive.

At a recent AZ gunshow, a fellow was selling a 99% 48 no dash for $475, and the fool buyer next to me was trying to niggle the seller down $25 (to $450) KNOWING that I was standing there next to him ready to pay full price! I just don't "get" people sometimes.

I recently picked up a 48-4 with a 8 and3/8" barrel that was near mint for $500. A previous owner had drilled and tapped the top strap for a scope mount.......otherwise mint with the original box, paperwork and tools! Locks up like a bank vault and is quite a shooter! I think Smith spent a little extra time with the "long barrel" versions..........they're never going to make another 48.......if you need one and it's like new.......look what the new stuff is listing for........my 2 cents!

Went to look at the gun, I had only talked on the phone to the gun shop.
It is a 48-4, it is excellent condition, but he turned down my cash offer of 580.00 plus tax, so I will kept looking I guess. I would rather have a 6"barrel, but was willing to try the 8", who knows, may have grown to like it.
