Here is S228672, a 29-1, 5 inch barrel that shipped 8/7/1962 to W.H. Kiefaber Co., Dayton, OH. There are less than 25 documented 29-1s and 2 of those are 5 inchers. I've also posted a shot of the yoke stamping for those of you interested in what to look for when searching for a 29-1. There are several arguments among collectors that some 4 screw Model 29s and three screw 29-2s better exhibit the actual characteristics of a 29-1 i.e.; left hand threaded ejector rod, L stamp on the rear of the cylinder, narrow uncut band on the ejector rod tip, etc., however, the concensus is still that the only true 29-1 is the one that is stamped as such.
Enjoy
Chuck

Wow..! That is one of the nicest Mod 29's of any type...that I have ever seen.
The stocks are the icing on the cake. Simply awesome!
Thanks for posting photos of that sweetheart, Chuck. Mod 29 porn at it's finest.

That thing could have plastic Hogues on it for all I care!
A true and factory made five inch 29 is my holy grail gun. I doubt I will ever have one or even get to hold one, but thanks for the great pictures of a truly beautiful gun!

Dear Merciful God in Heaven!!!!

Your gun hunting and photography skills are simply mind-blowing.

Let me be redundant and say that your 5" -1 is absolutely breathtaking.

Very pretty gun and beautiful stocks.

Every time I see a 5" 29 (and at what they cost, all I can do is SEE them) I wonder why the 5" wasn't regular production option. They look so good in this length.

That is awesome, indeed. What is the serial number range of the dash ones as opposed to those argued as having all the pertinent peculiarities less the dash one?

The serial numbers for the Mod.29, 29-1 and a few 29-2s are all intermixed from about May 1962 until the summer of 1963. there are documented examples of each model having shipped during that time period. Why? Who knows. What we are certain of is that the serial number order was not a consideration in the production of N frames; the 44 magnum for certain.

J.C. it's just the angle of the gun and the lighting. There's a clear rod in the trigger guard.

Chuck,
Thanks for the new background on my computer. I'm also thinking of blowing these photos up and using them as wallpaper in the kitchen.

By the way you owe me a new keyboard, as mine shorted out from my drooling over that gun. How about you send that 29-1 over here and we'll call it even

Thanks for the pics.

longhornscott only if I can come with it. I'm a native Texan stranded in the cold wastelands, at least right now, of NY and I'm about ready to head back to warmer regions.

BTT, one more look since the 29-1 on AA has now gone to a lucky collector. This is a fun model to chase after, but certainly difficult to catch.

Another example of one that S&W should have made as a regular production item. Ranks right up there with 3 inch 19s and 66s and 5 inch K38s and 5 inch 19s and 66s.

Great revolver!

J.C. thanks as I like to look at it too every once in a while. When I get a moment to spare, I want to post a picture of a pre-29, Mod.29, 29-1 and 29-2 all in 5 inch.

Chuck, DON'T DO IT!
I have only one heart and at my 58 going on 59 years it might not hold out!

Just go ahead and wrap it up... I'll take it...

First one to say "I'll take it gets it", right?

Oops... Wrong section.

Darn!!

A truly priceless treasure in the gun world, Chuck..

Terry, thanks for digging the posting for this old gal up. 29-1s are hard to find in any barrel length and those that do turn up often have some wear and tear which is ok too for this variation. This 5 incher fortunately came pretty much mint.
Regards
Chuck

Love the pics of the 5"er! Juuust Greaaat! I was inspired by your photo of your gun, so phoned up S&W custom shop to order a 29 and 27 classic with 5" tubes and few other changes that they install on other model, was told nolonger making guns to order, well I sure was blown over, a company with a custom shop that does not do custom work unless it is shown for sale from there performance centre? Well all you guys with these holy grails just hit the jackpot as the only way to get one, is find an original, only making your guns more valuable! The 29 was going to be mine and the 27 was going to be my nephews grade 8 graduation present, well have to look for other options, again thanks for the great post, cheers Dale in Canada!

Luckily, the Model 27/pre -27 series was made fairly often with a 5 inch barrel, so you ought to be able to find an authentic one of those.

As for a 5 inch Model 29, you could buy a 6-1/2 or 8-3/8 inch gun and have a name gunsmith like Hamilton Bowen make a 5 inch gun out of it for a lot less money than an original 5 inch Factory gun would cost. It wouldn't be factory but it would be a great belt gun.

Us peasants sometimes have to make do!

Buff you and I guess think alike, I have been looking at Bowens custom gun site for a while now, and I think it is the only way to get what I want, I think S&W are making a bad mistake not taking care of there loyal customers, been buying there guns for 19 years now! Anothe fellow who looks to do good work is Clements Custom Guns, looks like I have a couple phone call to make this week! ANd Buff a 5" N frame would make a perfect carry gun, unfortunately we here in Canada have no rights to anything, so you make sure they never take your rights away down south in the good old USA, cheers Dale from Canada!
