Are K frame short barrel revolvers outdated for concealed carry?
Thick through the middle, heavy for the size and 38 spl. caliber.
Back in the day, they were all we had. Now we have a ton of other choices. Would you (do you) carry one as a primary personal protection handgun?

Here's some eye candy, a Mod 64-3 and a Mod 10.

And here's an old "weapons system" that I bought as you see it. Gun, holster and wadcutters.

Somebody had this as their CCW back in-the-day.
From time to time I do too! With the exception of different ammo. Great double action and accurate with LSWC's. It's my walk-in-the woods gun. So not only do I carry one (sometimes, not always) I carry a really OLD one.

Now we carry a Glock 27 in a Kydex holster with "Personal Defense" hollowpoints.
About any semi-auto has more of a round count and would be easier to conceal.
Night sights, lasers, faster reloads, all things new and improved.

What say you? Useful or Useless?

I carry a nickel airweight bodyguard (mod 38), although I do have a model 12 nickel that is almost as light, I just cannot bring myself to carry it (the 12)...maybe cuz its in real good shape compared to the 38.

I don't care too much for the 21st century.

These guns are not "outdated". People killed with a .38 are still dead.

I like this one:

I've only shot this gun a dozen times, and I may end up needing a bit of work done to it, but otherwise, I would not hesitate to carry this gun. In fact, I think I would prefer it.

Excellent carry gun, definite cool factor and also great utility for home, car, etc., HOWEVER....
a 2" M64 was always on my want list. When I finally got one, my impression was that it was big for its intended purpose. I definitely feel my 3" M65 or 2.5" M19 are better suited IN THAT CATEGORY...that category being an extremely dependable small-"ISH" revolver for general carry, plainclothes police (where "absolute concealment" is less important than just "covered", etc.) I feel like a j-frame is even better for private concealed carry (where absolute concealment matters) and will readily trade the size and weight of a 5-shot "J" for the extra round of a "K".

FWIW, for ME a j-frame is a pocket gun, if I'm going to belt carry, it would normally be an auto, not a "K".

To be completely clear, I am still a fan and LOVE the 2" M10 and M64. Just prefer the 19 or 65 for a bigger wheel gun or a J-frame for a smaller one.

Someday, when I can afford to have at least one of everything....

Sir, FWIW, I just don't like K-snubs. I had two, a 2-1/2" Model 66 and a 3" Model 13. Both were too big for pocket carry and hard to shoot well with full-power ammo. Their days were numbered once I realized they were about as big as a 1911, which I could shoot much better.

That said, I wouldn't call K-snubs outdated if they work for you. Some folks think the 1911 is outdated, too.

Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

I have a 64 no dash and like it but my carry gun is a Pre Model 36 with Crimson Trace grips. I'll give up one round for the smaller package size.

There are a lot of dead bad guys killed with the 38 special and in +P it's a good defensive round.

Model 64

Model Pre 36

I regulary tote a 10-1 2" RB with bobbed hammer and smooth trigger. Still looking for the perfect grips so it's still wearing factory diamonds. No fear of being undergunned whatsoever.

Outdated?? Maybe, but then so am I!

I'd give up J-Frame snubs before my K-Frame snubs. Yes I tote a 2-inch K-Frame.

See bottom two on the Smith & Wesson side of the grouping. Both great toters!

It's ok to be out of style if still effective.

A few more. All have been carried at one time or another.

I have a model 64 (No dash) snubbie and a model 15 that the wife has commandeered for the kitchen. Both are fantastic shooters.

Heavy? Yes a little, but not noticeable in a belt holster.

My wife carried this Mdl 10-5 as her duty gun as a Deputy Sheriff about 35 years ago.

I picked up an unfired nickel mdl 12-4 just like it recently and carry it every day.

Works just fine even if it is a geezer gun.

Now you have done it! I'll have to dig up my old M&P and a vintage CC holster and carry it around for the next week. I am quite happy with K frame snubbies and frequently carry a 3in. M65. My fathers old M&P gets dragged out whenever I am feeling nostalgic or wearing a fedora.

Hey GF... a round butt pre-10 subbie, that's one seldom seen variation you've got there. Nice!!

I like the pre-10 snubs also:

Here are a couple of round-butt pre-10's with the grips numbered to the guns. It is interesting to note one set of grips have pre-war style checkering and the other post-war. It's bad when you buy guns just for the grips. John

Those are all very nice K frame snubbies. I would like to come across one some day. At least I did find a almost new M36 of 1975 vintage last year!
