I have a 1980 NIB/unfired 3rd generation Colt Detective Special.
There are two friend that want it. I dont want to sell it.
One has a 98%+ 18-4 4" (no box or anything)and the other has a 686-4 LNIB 4"

Question?? Would you trade for either of the guns or just keep the DS
sidenote: I will never shoot the DS.

Do you want either of the two guns offered in trade? If yes make a trade. If no just say you are not in a trading mood. ( I would probably pass and I ain't really a Colt guy.)

V. The model 18 is the consummate K-frame 22. Equal to the K-22 Masterpiece.
I do not own a 4" K-22, and would love to have one.
How much do you love your dick? , You say you'll never shoot it. Would you shoot the mod.18?

22l.r. ammunition is so much less expensive than even reloading 38s'. I would consider a K-22 a prime acquisition.

Are you a Colt man, or, a Smith, man?

Good luck, ,,Al

NIB Detective Specials seem to be going for $550-$600 on GB (wow).

I'd hang on to the Colt and try to buy the 18-4 (if you don't have one already).

Keep the DS. Buy the S&W of your choosing. Just becuase you may not now shoot it, you may have a change of heart, and the DS in new condition is getting harder to find and when you do, they are pricey.

Thanks guys - the first few responses are good.
I really don't want to get rid of the DS as I've had it for a long time but don't like having a gun that I don't shoot.
I'm not a 22 shooter but am getting pissed more and more with the cost of ammo.
I do not reload presently but would like to in the future.
My daughter and I love shooting the L frame 357's.
Do you see my problem?
The friend will not sell the 18 outright.
The friend with the 686 has it priced too high to buy it outright.
Damn, I love this hobby!

My advice would be to keep the D/S and start shooting it as 38 spec. ammo is a bargain at most gun shows. Save your extra cash and when you've got enough stashed away, pick up a nice Model 18. I own both, a 1950's D/S and an early 1970's Model 18 and enjoy shooting both. The only thought against my plan is I haven't saw too many Model 18's for sale lately, but the way the economy is going you may find a good one.

Regards:
Rod

Personally, I'd keep the DS and shoot it. They are great guns.
If you insist on never shooting it, you might as well sell it. Take the money, buy the S&W of your choice and pocket the left over cash. The DS is worth considerably more than either of the Smiths.

Not me VM, I'd trade for the Mod 18.
I traded two LNIB Rugers for the same reason as you, not gonna shoot 'em.
You've probably had the Colt for awhile and don't have a lot of money in it. If the .22 looks good - Trade!

GF's 0.2c worth!

I would keep that pony if it were me. Try and buy the 18. Those colts are bringing a premium, when they are NIB. I slip up and wander over to a colt site from time to time, alot of folks would nab it if they had a chance. Kinda like finding a 36 no dash NIB. IMHO. I think the 36 would be worth more, but to a colt guy maybe not. I have a MkIII Trooper in nickel, NIB, and it is staying right where its at. Good luck.

I would keep the DS and pick uo a Model 18 somewhere. Both are fine revolvers.
