Was out doing a pre-election sweep of the local gun stores and pawn shops to see what they had that might be interesting. Very few S&W revolvers on the market around here, but did find a 36 2" at a decent price of $275. When they took it out of the case I noted the Serial # J550XXX, 36 no dash, pinned bbl. Then I saw the rust on the bbl, backstrap, frame near grip. It might come off with a little work but then I saw where the previous owner had scribed his initials on the left side plate. Bout made me cry. Gun appeaded to have been fired very little. Hardly any drag line on the cylinder.
What do you guys thing? Is it worth making an offer on and just keeping as a pocket gun. I was going to offer $225 and see what happened.

My rule of thumb is..........Any revolver that works is worth $200.

Since a previous owner trashed it by carving his initials in it, maybe you could get the seller down to around the $200-$225 area. You could then shop around for another side plate, and reblue the gun yourself, or have it done. If there is no rust or pitting in the bore and it locks up tight, it may be worth it.

Prices certainly vary depending on where in the country you are. Here in pricey NM, that would be the best price you'd get for a Chiefs Special that had been so mutilated. Absolutely you should try to see if they'll take a better price than the one advertised, though.
