I was visiting my local pawn shop looking for S&W bargains but then they pulled this out of the safe:

Since there weren't any Smith bargains to be had, I brought home my first "bottom feeder" in a decade.

I have always admired the Hi-Power and a factory made target version seemed ideal for me.

I took it to the range and it shot like a dream. A ragged hole at 25 feet and a dinner plate at 50 feet. (two handed standing) As usual, the gun out-shoots me.

I saw one of those about a year ago and let the folks know on the Browning Hi Power site where it was. The new owner was happy. I would have bought it if it had the same finish as a blued gun. Still, you got a piece of history.

A HP was my first centerfire pistol. I bought for my high school graduation in 1972. I dispalyed it with my other school graduation presents when I graduated. I still have it. $114.00 new in 72.

Nice Find!!
I notice the trigger pin has been center punched to increase it's diameter, It may have been loose in the frame somewhat..
You need to look into the BHP = Browning Hi-Power Forums..

I have a couple of HP's, and the Competition is one of my favorites. Most accurate HP I've ever shot.

Congratulations on finding a no-so-common example of the finest semi ever made!

HA!HA! Made me look! I had not noticed that until you pointed it out, but a trip to the safe verified that it was only oil on the gun. The pin is flush with the frame, no punch, but you did make me look!

Thanks Raider, actually, that is a barrel weight only, no holes at all, it just fits over the barrel with a retainer screwed onto the threaded barrel.

Ted Yost just finished this BHP for me and it shoots like a dream! If you need mags I strongly recommend Mec-Gar they are available in 13 and 15 round flush fit and 20 rd extended. All are the best BHP mags I've ever used.

S&W Chad:

Your Steyr GBs bring back memories - when I was in college there was a police officer that worked part time as a security guard on a large farm outside of town. He bought a Steyr GB amongst a lot of criticism and laughter (friendly) about his huge pistol that was only a 9mm (this was still during the days when revolvers still ruled). He had his GB in a shoulder holster under his coat when he surprised some guys trying to steal some cows. They got the jump on him and relieved him of his long gun, disabled his truck and started to drive off. He emptied his magazine into the truck and was able to wound 2 of the 3 rustlers. They surrendered and he arrested them, and then got help for the wounded. No one laughed at that guy anymore for his "9mm short rifle".

Regards,

Dave

Great info. I was unaware that there were compensated HP-Competitions. Where are the holes and how many are there?

These were introduced about 1983 or so. I bought two of them NIB at that time based on an advertisement in Shotgun News but never could come to like them. I never understood why they were parkerized as opposed to blued. There were persistent rumors over the years that either the slides or frames on this model were prone to cracking.

Buck, is that a silvery finish? If so, I don't believe it's original. I've seen a bunch of Comps, and never seen one with ports, or in any original finish but park. My main reference bible for all things HP is The Browning High Power Automatic Pistol by Blake Stevens, and doesn't mention anything but park either.

Looks nice though!

RGAmos, I've never heard that rumor. I know a few folks with Comps, and none have had any trouble. That is my experience as well. Granted I've only put a couple thousand rounds through it, and that's not much for a competition gun, but it's never hiccuped.

I would have rescued that one too! Maybe it's growing up in the 70's, but that's one I'd be proud to have.

Cool!

Heckler Koch made a P9s 9mm target gun(adjustable trigger etc) with extended barrel and weight, mid 70's-mid 80's, they are insanly accurate(even without the barrel/weight)

this was a 9mm target that I added the barrel and wieght, the true SG's have front sights on the weight with nothing on the barel. Some came as kits with a combat slide and target slide.

so I guess I need to find a comp Hi-Power and a comp GB(love my GB)

BHP's have always intrigued me. Currently have a pair. This one; a Teflon'd, slightly mod'd carry gun and one of the silver target models.

You're punny! The "evidence gun" kinda clued me.

If you decide that it needs refinishing, please let me know. Maybe we could arrange a trade or sale. It just seems to me that it's a part of history or sumpthin'. Past history to be sure, but some fond memories of the wild an crazy times, before it all got so ugly.

45wheelgun, best place I've found to get the Mec-Gar mags is CDNN;
http://www.cdnninvestments.com/hi9mm215mane.html

The "South African" mags are actually made in Argentina. They are ok, but I'd stick with the Mec-Gars. Sometimes Midway has a good price on them too.

Speaking of pretty Hi Powers, here's one built by Austin Behlert, a custom builder that was in business from the 60's through the 80's.

Hoot,

The gun has a very dark parkerized finish. What you are seeing is the effect of flash at about 3 inches. I shot it last night inside after dark so that I could post a reply to the compensator question. That was the reason for my apology about picture quality. I prefer to do my gun photos outside under diffuse natural light.

Buck, thanks for the clarification. I'll ask around and see if anyone else I know has seen a ported Comp.

I prefer using more natural light also, but I know we can't always get what we want.

The grips are Craig Spegels

The over all finish is bead-blasted blue with polished slide flats. If you are referring to the texture on grip (front and back strap) that's the just the subtle way Ted stipples his grip frames. When you grip the pistol it feels kind of like a cross between skateboard tape and a cat's tongue.

13 and 15rd Mec-Gars are available from Brownells, Midway, and others on the web. The 20 rd mags seem much more scarce. I finally had my dealer special order them direct from Mec-Gar, and delivery took about 5-6 weeks.
