Just wanted to thank everybody who helped me in understanding the "numbers", when I was in the process of trying to work a deal on the Model 18. The owner really didnt know too much about the gun, and had it advertised as a K22, 4", which lead me to believe it was a Model 17...He thought it was a "Masterpiece" but was not sure of the model number. Anyway, with your help we got the gun identified, and finally worked a deal. The gun is shipped and should arrive next week. His asking price started at 695.00, and after three days of beating up on each other (actually the guy was very decent), we came to a settlement on the price. so, I am looking forward to my "new" Smith 22 revolver....my "first" 22 revolver! Now all I have to do is get a nice set of grips like GF has on his 18 to give it that "classic look"! Thanks again for all your help!!!! FT

Well Duke, I dont know if it will be a "prize", but judging from the photos (which can be misleading), and the owners description (which can be overstated), it seems like a nice gun. I guess I will just have to wait and see. It should be here by mid week...........My main concern is mechanical, but hey, anything can be fixed! I am wondering what ammuntion others have found to be less problematic in 22LR Smiths...that should be something I need to ask, and as always, I am sure there is plenty of info here that will help me with that choice!!!

My K .22's like Remington Target ammunition, Winchester is OK, CCI is good, the only problematic .22 ammo is Federal, any type of Federal gives sticky extraction in both revolvers, a 6" K.22 Masterpiece and a 4" K.22 Combat Masterpiece.

My neighbor and his buddy both shoot 617's 6" and 4" respectively, and the only thing that doesn't give sticky extraction is value packed Wally world Federals. I haven't had a chance to shoot my (new to me) model 17-3 yet.

........sounds like each gun is different. I am taking notes here, and will most likely buy a box of each, and see what the gun likes. thanks, and any more pointers would be appreciated.

That's the single best way to learn what ANY .22, rifle or pistol, likes and is a fun way to learn to boot!

You are right about that! When I was shooting NMC, my High Standards liked CCI's and shot them better than any of the expensive match grade ammo on the market. Once, just to see how accurate my comp pistols really were, I made a scope mount and put a 24X Lyman Seibert conversion benchrest scope on one...off the bench, that darn thing would shoot one ragged hole at 50 yards...I was amazed!!!! I use CCI Mini Mag hp's in my squirrel rifle and they will one hole as well, and I am hoping that the Mod 18 likes them as well...That is a very good field load for small game!

Congratz flat top!
On the ammo question - before I knew any better, I traded off many a gun 'cause they "wouldn't shoot".
.22's being at the top of the list.
Someone smarter that me asked if I had tried different ammo before I sold my gun.
No.
So buy some boxes of 50 before you buy a case of 1000!
Eley Sport, the cheapest of Eley brand I think, shoots well in about anything I've tried it with.
Good luck, and pictures are required.

Got it flat top and Duke 426 got the pic posted up before me!
In answer to your question about K frame magnas for your Mod 18,if you put a request on the Classifieds on this forum I'm sure someone would have a set to sell.
E-bay is an option but this our home & I'd try it first!
Great condition on that revolver, by the way.

GF; Yup, that Duke is a hard one to beat out!!!! LOL!!! Thanks Duke!!! GF, thanks for the info on the grips, I will give that a shot when I get the gun. As far as condition of the gun, It looks ok from the photos I have of it, but, it will be a shooter, so, condition was not that important. The owner kept going on and on about how nice it was (he had a nice asking price as well...695.00), but, anything almost 40 years old has to have some flaws. My main concern is that it is mechanically sound and is accurate...if it is just that much, I will be happy. If it looks "too good" when I get it, I just might have to sell it and get a more well worn model! The last thing I want to do is mess up a nice Smith!!!
