A brace of 28-2 HIGHWAY PATROLMANS
I finally got around to taking some group pics of the recently acquired 28-2 HIGHWAY PATROLMAN revolvers.
The top revolver was purchased a few weeks ago for $625 and the lower revolver was purchased last week for $575.
I gave them a proper cleaning after purchasing them and got around to dragging them out earlier today for some pics. Just a wipe down with a rag and then pics taken. It is a little overcast today but I tried to make the best of it.
While not cosmetically perfect they do make me smile. I feel these N-Frame .357Magnums are a good bargain when found in this condition and price range.
The upper HP's grip serial number is off by only 300 numbers from the frame. (An inadvertant department/agency grip swap?)
The lower HP's right grip has a matching serial number, but it's left side grip has some visible wear. (Possibly a left handed owner using a left side holster?) It also had a previous owner who loved their lead projectiles as it took some time to "get the lead out". The chambers and barrel did clean up very nicely though with a bit of work on my part.

Beautiful, and I think it’s important to have a “set” of them!

Your 28-2s are beautiful, and far as I'm concerned, it's one of the best revolvers made by Smith & Wesson...or anyone, actually. The prices you paid are very good...wish I could find 'em that inexpensive.
Do you know manufacturing years yet? I'd be interested in knowing.

Very nice examples. You make mention of dept or agency. I see no holster wear or turn line. Were they refinished? They look super!! When were they made?

Slight wear in places and slight turn lines. Not refinished. Just nice well taken care of examples......but not perfect.
I wish the lighting had been better outside today. Here is a link to more pics of both from a previous thread: (See posts #8, #9, and #10 from the link below)
Highway Patrolman info needed **PICS ADDED**
The upper one's s/n is N268387 and the lower one's s/n is N86945. Most likely making them an early and midrange'ish 1970's vintage?

They probably range 72 to 75. Well, it must be the lighting. They look brand new. Nice set. I have some, but I am not home to post pics

Well they look "almost" new. Very nice condition indeed for their respective prices.
But thank you for the "brand new" comment though.

Making me drool over here OP. Nice pair of 28s. They’ve become highly collectible in recent years.

Nice guns man!
Here is my pair of 28's I bought last December. The 4" gun is a late "S" serial and the 6" is a 5 digit N serial.

Nice...…….your example's grip s/n is almost 4000 units away from the gun's s/n. NY must have had many HP's and thus I am assuming it was possibly swapped by them. (?)
The top example in my pictures has a grip s/n that is only about 300 units away from the frame's. I probably should get it lettered to see if it may have been a department or agency revolver.
Who knows maybe it had the wrong grips on it at some point in it's life and someone (civilian) got lucky and "found" a set approx 300 units away from the gun's s/n? Seems rather unlikely but not impossible I guess.

I have two in the safe, a 3 1/2 and a 4 inch (there's a back story there). The 4 inch has been claimed by my grandson...

OP, nice pair!
Here is mine: N5373xx, with Magnas and Tyler-T, from 78-79, and N418xx, with target stocks, from early 70’s (SCSW is vague on N1-N99999). I might start looking for a 6”, but I like the looks of the shorter barrel. I also find that I am more accurate with the shorter barrels, in most instances, out to 25 yards.

I looked at an excellent condition 6" S-prefix HP at the same gunshow that I bought one of my examples. No box, and the seller would not budge off of his $1000 asking price.

After looking at my smaller K-frame 4" Victory models all these years when I look at a larger N-frame with a 4" barrel it almost looks too short to truly be a 4" barrel!

Very nice set of HPs. My only HP has serial number N925 and was shipped in May 1970. Click on the photo for a closer look.

I have a pair....sort of. They both say 28-2 under the yoke, but this one is a .44 Special...
I had it converted by George Matthews of Downey, CA in the early 70's, using an original model 24 barrel. That is a first generation ProPoint, when Tasco optics were still made in Japan.
This one I picked up about a month ago. It is an "S" serial number and had diamond Magna stocks, but the number on the stocks was several hundred off the number on the gun, so I installed a set of elk stag Magnas...
Adios,
Pizza Bob

I find some of the most interesting customization done to 28's. I guess the lower cost entry point makes them good candidates. I like yours a lot. I love 5" N frames. I don't think I would have been able to pass on it had I seen it for sale.
Here's what I call my Model 28 Mountain Gun. Someone roundbutted it, chamfered the cylinder face, and slapped on some early 90's combat stocks.

It kinda makes one wonder why S&W didn't offer the HP in a 5" variant.
Seems like the perfect compromise for officers who couldn't decide between the 4" or the 6" barrel.
Thanks for sharing it.
Can someone measure the exact barrel length of one of their 4" examples? (Forcing cone face to muzzle) I am curious if it is exactly 4".
Both of my 6" HP barrels measure out to be about 5 7/8".

Maybe the owner wanted folks to know they used to be there...…...or maybe the 'smith felt the transition to the area above the grooves would be a little difficult to get right?

A brace of 28-2 HIGHWAY PATROLMANS
I admit I am a bit of a hoarder with OCD, I usually buy two of everything and really have to tell myself not to add a third or even fourth similar gun....for now I have managed to limit myself to two 28-2s.

I have no idea what you’re talking about. That’s a strange problem to have On a more serious note, the under appreciated Model 28’s were a fantastic economic source of diamond target stocks about ten years ago. The stocks even came with S prefix N frames!
Front to back
1958 unfired (wearing the stocks from the ‘66)
1964 wrong stocks (unrelieved)....score!

The M28 is probably the best value around in a hard/serious use .357. I'll admit that the odds of me ever shooting enough .357 ammo to make one worthwhile are slim, but I would not be above getting a 6" and having a good 'smith cut it to 5". I think that's about the best compromise barrel length for almost all uses.
I can recall back in the 70s, M28s were the basis for a lot of conversions, for lots of good reasons. .44 Special; both .45 rounds, etc. To a great extent, they still are.
