I would proudly carry the Model 58 with ".41 Special" loads (similar to Skeeter loads I carry in my 624's). That will make a superb woods gun and handle most anything you meet except hunting truly big game. That load (.41 Special), just to make myself clear, would be in .41 Magnum cases but giving 950-1000 fps with a 210-220 gr Keith style bullet. This is a relatively light revolver (even tho' strong enough for full magnum charges) and would be quite comfortable with the load discussed.
All of this assumes that load will shoot to the point of aim at 25 yards. Naturally, you will have checked that out before heading to the woods.

Colby,
You got a nice one! I've ALWAYS wanted a M58. They always struck me as a "roided out" Model 10. If memory serves, I think that the "San Fran-sicko" PD and Amarillo PD were two of the "big" Deaprtments that issued them. I think many Detroit guys carried them also.
It's a shame that the gun/round never caught on. Great combo. I know that S&W is getting all manner of folks asking for another run of the M58. Perhaps they will come out with a "Classic" run of them in the future.
Congrats of the find! Regards
-Greg Topp

Here is a "steroid" photo for you, a 31-1, 10, and 58. It is a hoot...searching for another one.

It acutally reminds me of my three inch 13. Wish I had one, plus a Model 10 like that to go with them.

The only reason I come here is that I hope someone will post pics of 4" 57s, 58s, or (Pre)19s (that Reg. Mag. posted within the last few days was really cool too). I hope I can someday afford a 58 as nice as yours looks.
Thank you for sharing your acquisition,
Scott

Hummmm... Does that barrel read .44 Magnum? If so, is it a mismarked barrel, or has the gun been converted to .44? Nice grips, BTW.

This one has been posted before.
I carried it as a LEO for 13 years and we both earned and wear our scars with pride.

Nah... I don't think so, I think just some kind of no names I've had for years. I'll double check the inside of them and see if I can find a maker's name.

That would be my ideal gun, with some warm .44 specials.
Another great idea that S&W missed!!!!!

Superman,
Thanks, I needed that orgas.....er, heart-attack.
You seem to have enough 58s that if one got misplaced, you'd never even notice it was gone.
This is my first Smith and was my only Smith up until a couple months ago, it needs a 58 of the same vintage to keep it company:
Sorry to the OP but it seems this thing got hijacked a long time ago.
Thanks again and congrats,
Scott

Scott...you are welcome...for whatever you had...
Several of the .41s are no longer with me but then again several have been added.
The top two guns to the right (57 MG and a 1980 57) in the group picture to right were sold to friends. The blue and nickel 1967 58s were sold on GunBroker. The 57-1 nickel on the bottom (that was NIB) was replaced by the 57 nickel with the ivory grips w/T-grip. I still have the rest including the two 58s, the customized and the 1964 parkerized now wearing a set of Cokes.
Now is the time to buy a 58 as the prices seem to be off about 20% from just a few months ago... Shooter grade guns that were brining in the $750-800 area are now in the $600s. When I get back home there is a 95% blue early 70s 58 waiting for me to pick up that was a $650 BuyNow on GunBroker.
You have a very nice 57...now go get a little brother for him... From the looks of your gun you must need a 1964-66 M58...that I am afraid will be some bucks...

I guess I should have worded the question different.
I was wondering If he had it converted or did he obtain the gun after it was converted.

I did convert this one, but Doc44 posted pictures of his factory "29-58" at one point.
It was a one of a kind.

Superman,
It's in the S319XXX range so I believe I've been told late 68/early 69.
I went and checked GB and there's a '68 58 in there that looks great. S296XXX serial # range. Buy it now for $900 though. ETA: Check out the ampersand on the barrel!!!!! Link to auction, hope this is okay to do.
I also just noticed that for my 57th post, I posted a pic of a 57. It's got to be a sign.

I think it was San Antonio, not Amarillo (although they may have had them, too). I was fortunate enough to get a 58 from SFPD- through one of the Smith forum classifieds! For the price they were selling on GunBroker, it was worth it to spend just a few more dollars for a PD-marked gun from a fellow Smith forum member. They're a great piece of metal!!!

Maybe I'll turn up a M58. I had one years ago and sold it to a fellow collector. Big mistake after seeing what they're selling for now. I paid $275 when I bought it. I could just puke!

..you don't need .41 Special, a case trimmed to the same length as a .38 Special, just the old "Police" 210 lead load that runs 950 fps from a 4" barrel.
Georgia Arms has a 210 LSW that won't lead up the barrel like the old Remington and Winchester rounds did.

I have a couple of the SFPD 58's including one that was converted to a 3" for plainclothes use at the time.

My 41 Special Loads are:
8.0 Grains of UNIQUE...This load duplicates the "Old Police Load". 1,000 feet per second.
5.0 grains of UNIQUE...This is my PPC Load.

8.0 is my favorute load. Depending on the bullet used it will run 925-980 from a 4" barrel...
5.0...does that leave holes or dents in the target... I have never loaded that low with Unique before...what does a 210 LSWC chrono at that charge weight..
Elmer...a 3" M58 with a round butt would be just the Cats*****...it would look just like a 3" M10 on steroids...
