Mod. 520 NYSP
I was at my local FFL dealer, picking up a transfer, (another thread on it) when one of the guys behind the counter mentioned he a S&W that he was trying to sell. I immediately inquired and the next day, I came home with this Model 520. No box, and it's a shooter, just a couple of minor handling marks, and what I think was a very fair price. Yea me!

It's an N frame in .357 Mag. Pinned barrel, blued, and fixed sights. Pity they didn't make more of these!

It's the only fixed sight 357 N-frame. It was an order of 3000 for NYSP, in 1980, that they never accepted. They have the delux blue, instead of the M28 blue. I would have liked to see them in 3.5" and 5". Do we know what NYSP got instead of the 520?

I believe they ended up with 4 inch 681’s. L-frame.

Great find for a great looking revolver there. I would like to find a shooter grade to use. I had a NIB that I ended up selling.
Are you going to share what you paid for it with us?

I have a 3.5" round butt 520, that I got from another forum member. Yes, I know it's not a factory gun, but it looks like one.
It has a model 27 3.5" barrel with custom front sight. Very cool!

I was relieved of 14 portraits of President Grant and one portrait of Mr. Franklin of Philadelphia. Gladly, I might add.

As gun-progressive a state as NY is, they probably went back to bows and arrows.
The M520 is my Holy Grail gun, would love to find one in as nice a shape as this one.

If memory serves, I paid something like $700-$800 apiece for two 520s in separate transactions.
But that was quite a while back--like maybe 15-20 years ago.
So yes; the OP did very well price-wise.

It’s hell to get old and forgetful. For some strange reason I thought the 681replaced the 520. What makes it funnier is I own a NYSP 28-2 that is the correct answer. Pictured below.

Nice find. I had a number of fixed sight N-frames over the years in 45 ACP and 44 Special. I remember seeing these but did not get one.

No doubt. However, a lot of people aren't familiar with the M20 though, and it was a 38 special.
My comparison to the M28 was to compare it to another .357 chambered model that almost everyone around here is very familiar with.

I think it should be called 357 Magnum Military & Police HD.
N-frame lust can be a cruel affliction, but the treatment is quite gratifying.

Many, many years ago when I was first starting to get into S&Ws, I ran a cross a NIB 520 at a gun show. I didn't really know what it was, but was very interested. I believe the price was in the $400-500 range. Spent quite a bit of time arguing with myself over buying it or not. Finally decided I wanted adjustable sights and walked away. I've never seen another one since.
Ah yes, the mistakes of our youth.

Here's my 520 with my 58 when I still had the 520.
I didn't see myself ever shooting the 520 so I sold it.
I figured someone else would enjoy having it more than I did.
The 58 is a keeper. Its one of my favorites.

Make that three, maybe four...The one I traded away is still within the state lines the last I heard, and my other one is still in my possession with box and goodies...I believe your two pictured are the only S&W N-frames to be shipped with PC Magnas...I've heard several times that the 520's often were shipped with numbered Magnas not matching the frame...The one I have left is like that, and I believe them to be original... ...Ben

I have a first year model 58 and a 520 in TX as well. Both with PC magnas, the diamond ones on the 58 numbered to it. The PC magnas on the 520 do not match, numbers off by about 10 if I recall correctly.

I've had this NIB example for years.
For years I tried to talk myself into shooting it, but I never could. Last year I went on a quest for a shooter 520, but I never expected it to come to anything. To my great surprise, a forum member offered one to me at a price I was very pleased to pay. This one goes to the range often and has become one of my favorite revolvers and is my favorite .357 Magnum. Honestly, I regret never shooting my first one, but now it gets to stay in new condition.
Here's the shooter 520.

Just a theory.
Maybe the state was putting on Goodyear’s before issuing to the Troopers?
Then they changed direction, and had all that wood and just put whatever they had together, not thinking about matching anything up?
