I have a 4" HP ser N5294XX purchased by my ex-brother inlaw as a duty weapon from Inland Marine in Palestine, Texas on 1/30/79. He was on the Anderson County Sheriff's Department at the time, and eventually replaced this weapon with a Glock. It's in excellent condition, with box and papers. I occasionally shoot a PPC match with it, just for grins. It will never leave my hands, for sure...

"1974--1977 N200000

1975--1976 N300000"

Eh?

The 'Second Edition' lists:

N190001 thru N430000 production dates from 1975 thru 1977. What am I missing here? My own 28-2 is numbered 2812xx which would suggest a mfg. date sometime in early-to-mid 1976.

Nicely done! Geez , mine is the oldest 6" 5-screw so far.

Shame I might be trading it away soon.

Allen-frame, a spread sheet like Excel is a wonderful, relatively low-tech tool for manipulating data. Depending on information you collect, you can sort the info in interesting ways w/graphs. I'm probably preaching to the choir but just wanted to get that out there. Good luck.

This is S116413 shipped 9/3/54 to Seattle Hardware. That would be 7 months before I was born in the same city.

You got it right those old HP's are great. I bought mine for $180 several years ago. Had to put some work into it but now it looks good as new. Working on tracking down what police agency used it. It has an extra serial number on the left side of the frame just above the trigger. I contacted Texas DPS and they said it wasn't one of theirs. Bought it in El Paso Tx so just a few more states to check in those parts. Need to get around to writing S&W and see where they shipped it to. Could cut down on some phone calls and emails.
Great shooter. Have been though many N frames, economic ups and downs, but have kept this one.

Al,

Are you separating by 4 & 3 screws? Anomalies/aberrations?

Thanks,

Hope it's ok to resurect this thread.

Went to the Boise gun show today. Most things VERY overpriced. (581 for $650.00 or something like that)

Anyway, one guy had two 28s. One of them was in the N600,000 range and looked nice. No buggered up screws, side plate had never been pried off, etc. But then I noticed the 27 cylinder, and that it had NO barrel/cylinder gap. So even for $425.00 I passed on it. He also had a very shooter grade one but the cylinder was loose as could be.

So I could have had two 28s for $825.00 but I left them both there and have no regrets.

Has anybody ever seen one with a 27 cylinder before? I wonder what happened to the original one.

fwn

Extremely pleased that I can contribute to this thread.
Picked up a 28-2 today at the gun show in Mesquite (Dallas) today.
Have not looked up date yet in the SWSC #3 but will do later.
This one is stamped with a DPS #
Serial Number N563577

Acquired .... what I'm learning is a 28-2 4" barrell in Dec. Can't post photos because I don't have him home yet but will share as soon as I do. I think its the variant listed in sw catalog as being for the New York State Police. The ser.# is N5471**, and I'll check for the NYSP to make sure.
Now for some help if you please. Every 28 I've seen posted on here has the diamond ( wood ) grips. The one that I bought has black rubber ... is it possible that it was shipped llike that ??
Also ... other than minor holster wear to the blueing, it appears to be in top shape. Would it be wiser to leave it as is or send it back to S&W for their " restoration" service. I'm already planing to have them research it for me, but I really don't know which way to go on the resto.

Thanks for any and all help .... I need it.
PatG.

Allen - I already have two, the picture is on page four. I posted here because I thought this was a thread about 28s.

redsfan2 - All S&Ws shipped with diamond grips before about '68. Others here will know better, or more precisely. As far as I know no -2 or older ever shipped with rubber grips on it. A lot of people bought their Smith and then took those perfectly good stocks off and replaced them with the rubber stuff and did I have no idea what with the stocks. I do know there is a shortage of them now.

Thanks for the insights. That's kind of what I had thought too, but I had nothing to base it on other than pictures ( of others ) and the couple of paragraphs that I've read .

A lot of great 28's are showing on here. REally getting stoked about getting mine here.

4" 28-2; sn S2244xx. Came with Goodyears & looks like somebody re-finished the cylinder w/ high polish. I'm thinking of getting it hard chromed & putting some micarta magnas on it; it just doesn't look right with targets (even Spegels):

those are slick guns, but i think i would definitely consider stripping the thick gooey finish from the grips of the bottom revolver, especially what is in the checkering, and redoing them.

No S&W revolver says "I mean business" more than a 4" Model 28 with magna grips. So much so that I bought one last Sunday.

But that photo there is the pinnacle of that - that would have to be one of the first ones ever, wouldn't it?

Allen-Frame, I gave you this once before, but I guess you didn't see it. As posted before, I own a model marked 28 no dash 4 screw 4" serial number S1821XX that you can update your list.

Okay you guys,, I will get out the paperwork and re-edit the stats ,,and list them on the first page for easy reference.

I am currently agonizing over pulling the trigger on a 4" model 28 4 screw for near $500.
Really nice condition wearing goodyears.

I know if I don't grab it ,somebody else will. There are a lot of nuts out there you know!

Thanks to all who've contributed ,,,,,Allen Frame

That is a little high for one with Goodyears, but if you don't get over there and grab it, I'm coming down there and teach you a lesson.

My new-to-me 28-2. It's now wearing it's original grips. Sure wish I'd have kept that 'S' numbered 28 10 years ago, but I like this one also.

I picked up another 28-2 4" 99% no box or docs S/N S2381XX yesterday, but it needs the proper grips. I'll post pix later.

Me too, D-back. Not yet picked-up, on lay-away: a 6" 28 no-dash, 4-screw, sn S120000. I think that all those zeros must have beguiled me. Either that, or this thread has been a bad influence. Also saw a 28-2, 4-screw sn S221xxx, but its timing was off a bit, so passed on it espite a fairly good price ($375). Shop also has a M27 no-dash, 4-screw, 6-1/2" bbl w/ pinned rear ramp sight; sn S220xxx. I thought this was a bit unusual; don't recall seeing 6-1/2" M27's (pre-27's, yes, but not 27's). Shop owner said that he's keeping that one. -S2

Speedo ,,if that 28-2 was actually a S221xxx gun it may have been one of the first 28-2's ever.

I have a 27-1 with a ser.# of S2214xx .
Please either buy the 28-2 or e-mail me the info on it.
It may help narrow down the existence of the 28-1.

Regards ,,Al

I have never seen a 27-2 or a 28-2 that was a 4-screw. The removal of the screw in front of the trigger guard was one of the engineering changes that differentiated the "-2" from the "nodash" and, if the 28-1 exists, the "-1". I too would be very interested in seeing (if not owning) Speedo's 28-2 4-screw...

Al & RK, going by memory that it was a 4-screw & sn S221xxx. E-mail sent to Al with contact info. I will re-visit the shop and take some photos tomorrow. -S2

A four-screw framed revolver that is stamped -2 would certainly be an oddity, but would also be incorrectly stamped. A Model 28 with a serial number in the S221000 range certainly could be a four-screw as this frame was made to about S228000. It may also be marked MOD-28, have a four-screw frame, but have an extractor rod with a left-hand thread, and would be configured like a -1 model variation. This serial number is right at the transition to the -1 and shortly thereafter, the -2 model variation.

CORRECTION,CORRECTION, CORRECTION:
The HP that I saw (and passed on), but tried to describe a couple of days ago is actually a 28-no dash (not a 28-2, as earlier described); 4-screw, sn S2211xx. Some photos:

Once again, thanks for the correction and sorry for the confusion. Guess the hunt for the first 28-2 and those elusive 28-1's continues. -S2

Well that narrows it down some.
If we have S2211xx as a model marked 28,, and S2214xx as a model 27-1 , we now know where to start looking for that 28-1.
I'm showing S223xxx as a 28-2 , so that narrows down the possibilities to about 2600 odd units.

No wonder no one has found a 28-1 yet .

Good luck and enjoy your H.P.'s Regards ,,Al
