My Highway Patrolman was my second gun, if I blew the dust off my memories right. It's sort of funny now to recall that my intention at the time included getting my then-wife to like shooting. Instead of the six-inch K-22 that I bought soon after, I decided in my youthful way that a really heavy .38 wadcutter gun was the answer. Of course, a six-inch Model 28 is a little much for a petite woman with small hands, and the experiment, at least that part of it, failed.
No matter, because 35 years later, the 28's still here. It doesn't get shot too much any more, since for .36 caliber shooting I tend to prefer a Python. The double-action pull on this one was never the greatest and didn't respond to tuning attempts, so I put it back to original and just left it at that.
I also recall that my fourth attempt or so at organized pistol competition found me on the line of a steel plate match with the 28 and a belt full of HKS speedloaders. My respect goes out to the folks who've mastered those things, but I never did, leaving fresh ammunition frequently spread around on the ground or in the carrier. Since Safariland doesn't make their superb CompIIs or -IIIs for the N and I don't see the point of getting it moonclipped, it just remains as it always was.
It came as you see it here, with the exception of the orginal Magnas. Since I couldn't shoot the thing with the Magnas and bought these goncalo alves targets immediately, that's to me the real original appearance.
The serial number is 1072XX and I seem to recall that I bought it new at Bell's in Franklin Park, IL in November, 1973, for the princely sum of $140.00 plus tax.
There's no telling how many rounds have gone down the tube, but I'd guess it's an easy 30,000, the huge majority of them the old Hornady 158gr. swaged semi-wadcutters we used to get from the old Gander Mountain on Wilmot Road. I never did cast my own .357 slugs back in the day, saving that effort for .45s.
Ironically, if I could have any new Smith I could dream up, it would be a four-inch Highway Patrolman, in .44 Special or .45 Auto. Not a Highway Patrolman if it's a big bore you say? I say the HP has its own distinct personality, more workaday and lunchbucket-plain, and that's how I'd like my new one. I just like the bigger holes.

Here are the serial numbers of the ten known 28-2s finished in brushed nickel. These are from a very reliable source.
Seven in...N38XXX range
One.........N39XXX
One.........N40XXX
One.........N41XXX
Don't know if the one Smithnut shows is in that bunch or not.
These guns were each shipped appox. July, 1972.

I have acquired someone's safe king.......a NIB model 28-2 with box, serial number N26,7XX. Would this be 1969 vintage? It didn't even have a cylinder drag mark until I lubed it with break free and dry fired it a number of times. Not a mark on it. I'm delighted. I will, however, be shooting it. Most guns, to me, especially a Highway Patrolman, are meant to be used. I would have loved to carry this on the job in the 70's and 80's, although I didn't mind the model 10 I did carry.
Now it needs a brother model 27!

M28 no dash. 1960. According to the box it should have diamond target grips..I think. I'm going to get it lettered.

My dad's 28-2 pinned and recessed,N7344 he bought new in 69 or 70.He used it to take a black bear.It fell overboard in Lake Michigan in 1971,with out blinking an eye,he dove in,and did not come out till he had retrieved it.After he passed on,I sold it to pay the bills in 1980.Bought it back from the same fellow in 1991(for 3 times what I sold it for),sat in the holster loaded in his closet untouched for 11 years. This pistol, like most my Smiths can out shoot me.My son is going to try and take a deer with it this season.Used but not abused,a fine revolver!

Just when you thought the thread might end... here is the most recent addition to my 'family'
28-2 4" ser.# N8877#
She is a little worn, like me, and was most likely carried by a lefty. Once S&W starts doing letters again (10-15-08) I will check out her history.

Has anyone ever worn out an M28 like we always hear about happening to the 19/66?
The HP was discontinued in 1986. When did it come back, and what was it brought back as?
I love those 4 inch models. Those would be nice in an 8 shot.

I have only one to add to the list. A pre 28 serial number S 129113 that lives in a box belonging to a later gun with serial number S 147033.

The M28 did not have the same problem with cracking of the forcing cone as the M19 sometimes did. Which is not to say that poor maintenance or firing too many over pressure rounds did not damage some of them. Any gun can be wore out. But the M28 and the 27 were tough guns if properly maintained. That is my experience anyway
The M28 was never replaced with a stainless version. When it went it went. There never was a 628. The stainless N frame .357s tended to have the heavier bull barrel and full length underlug. Some one else can add more to this, there may have been a few tapered barreled .357s made at some point but I don't recall any regular production guns with them. A Mountain Gun maybe would be the closest.

I hope this isn't too vague or unanswerable of a question...
How does the model 28 differ from the model 19? I've owned a couple model 19's and a 686 and I'm trying to read through these posts and pics wondering what this model has over the other?
Thanks for your help!

chevy,
The Highway Patrolman was built on the larger N frame. The Model 19 on the medium sized K frame.

I understand they are different frames, the N being larger. I guess having never owned an N frame is what is throwing me off so much. Is it that much more sterdier?

This is my model 28-2. Its had the original barrell replaced with a 3" and modified from a square butt to a round butt.
Had thought about having it re blued or chromed, but I really just like it the way it is.

Yes. Before they were known as the N frame they were called the 44 frame. This is the standard frame size for the big bore calibers.

I don't have a pic handy, but I have a 28 I bought almost 30 years ago, and long story short, decided to sell off some guns, and this one doesn't get fired in almost 25 years, so it went on consignment at a local shop.
It sat for about four months, with a price of about $350, in close to mint condition.
It bothered me the whole time, I shouldn't be selling a Smith and Wesson. Told the owner if people could not realize it was a good deal, I'd rather just keep it in my safe.
I brought it home, have been shooting it again, and what a great gun, on a great frame: Classic Smith and Wesson.
Moral: Don't sell your guns.

Just another gratuitous photo to provoke an answer to a question I can't remember.
What's the given weight for an empty four-inch M-28?
Meanwhile, I was digging around in my recollections about buying my first Highway Patrolman, and I'm now convinced it was late in '73 and the selling price (new) was $125.00 plus tax.
Hope I figure out someday why this thing pulls my chain like it does.
I do have a pretty humorous real-life story about this one, having to do with a squirrel and the eave of an old house, but even thirty-some years later, I'm still reluctant to tell it in public for the risk of seeming to have colored outside the lines for a moment.
It didn't seem so at the time, though.

CherryRiver,
I bought a 4 inch 28 in 1973, I paid $125.00, the same as you recalled. It was my first centerfire handgun, now I really regret selling it, I have been looking for another one lately. I don't recall the serial number range, but I do have a letter from Smith and Wesson where I had asked about a change of finish and they advised that wasn't offered on the Model 28. Dick

I have a concept of "guns that make me get stupid", "stupid" mostly referring to purchasing without prudent financial surroundings.
Does that make it sound nice?
I probably shouldn't admit this, but a Highway Patrolman in .44 Special would get me stupid in seconds. Yeah, I've posted that before, and yeah, you could call out for a Model 24, but a Highway Patrolman is different, and special in a lunchbucket-plain kind of way.
Yeah, yeah, a 28's a .357 and that's that, but if I can just chuck this drill bit in the press here...

Very much so . Thank you for your efforts !
While I like seeing my contribution as the low serial number , I was hoping an earlier one would have been recorded by now .

Picked up this 5-screw 6 inch yesterday so I thought I'd pose it with a 28-2. It has some minor pitting from storage but the bore is a mirror. S112XXX. The 28-2 has hardly been shot but I think someone may have pried the sideplate. You can't tell from the pic but the target stocks have beautiful wood.
