I can't answer most of your questions, but I would like to welcome you to the forum. We have plenty of real experts on here, and I'm sure you will get lots of feedback. I can say, though, that the 28 was designed as a lower cost version of the flagship model 27, and it comes with a less shiny finish, which is sort of a matte texture, in contrast to the highly polished finishes on the more expensive models. It was designed as a working cops gun, and the matte finish was seen by many as an advantage, with less reflection when actually shooting it. I have one, and love it.

It's not going to be a safe queen, no matter what.

query: is your term cylinder counterbore what we used to call recessed chambers? If so, you say both were deleted in 82? I have a non pinned but counterbored 28, I'm sure because they were using up existing stock of cylinders...I just wonder how many like that are around...

Hi all, brand new to the forum, I found this thread while researching the build date of a HP that was my dads. Read through almost all of it, good stuff. Thought I would post a couple pics of my 28-2, built in 61-62 I think? Ser# S221941

At post #2001, I stated there had been no MOD.28-1 posts. OK, I was wrong. Its Sn. S225243, 6" with an L stamp on the back of the cyl. I believe there is also a Letter, verifying it was shipped Aug. 8, 1962 to Tryon Co. If there is one, there has to be more. Im still looking. Best

I think it's the lighting, some of the ID engraving the PD did under the grip has gone through to bare metal, if it's been refinished (full refinish) then the PD engraved it after which I doubt happen.

Found a 28-2 locally not sure on pricing.
Not new to firearms but very new to buying older S&W.
There's a local gunshop that has a 28-2 pinned barrel,
counterbored cylinder, with the non diamond stocks.
So I guess that puts it between 69 and 81.
Condition looks excellent, the only wear I see is a
drag line on the cylinder. Stocks look near perfect.
What I don't know is the going price. I see prices on
gunbroker for $750+ in some cases.
My 2016 blue book is saying a 100% condition model is $500.
The store is offering $729.
Any help would be appreciated.

Does it include box, tools, & factory paperwork? How much of a turn line on the cylinder?. That seems like an acceptable price for a near perfect specimen with all the accoutrements. If it's just the gun, and the turn line is pronounced or if any part of it isn't 100% original, the price sounds high to me.
But what do I know? I'm into shooters more than collectables....

Going price is generally between $500 & $800 or more if including box etc. depending on condition.
You'll have to judge condition yourself as we don't have pics.
You can't really trust the Blue Book. I've never found it to be in tune with reality. If you do follow it's recommended prices, you'll not be buying many guns.

Well, I added another HP to my accumulation. Serial is S205XXX. Picked it up last Sunday at the local gun show. This one is a 28 no dash, dates to 1960. This photo was taken when I first got it home, has not even been wiped down yet, but I ran a couple of cylinder's of 357 through it just before this photo was taken:
I am in the process of cleaning it up...have it disassembled, and soaking all of the parts and scrubbing them and checking for wear. Everything looks pretty good so far.

Thanks...I don't have a lot of N frames, but I have a 27-2 3 1/2", a 28-2 4", and now my 28 no dash. I also have a really old .44 Special Hand Ejector, 2nd Model, with a 6 1/2" bbl. But even though I mostly have I, J, and K frames (with a single L frame), I really enjoy shooting these big, heavy revolvers, as they hardly recoil even with full power loads. Also, I love older revolvers of all types, even, dare I say it?....the Colts!!

My 28-2 Ser No. N249xxx, previous owner put some red paint on the front ramp, and had the white lined rear target sights added (I think). Beautiful action. Shoots where you point it.

Hey guys, i just stumbled across this thread while doing some research. I was just gifted a S&W .357 H.P for Christmas. It was my Uncles and has been in storage for the last 25 years. Its an S 175xxx serial number. 4 screw highway patrol marked revolver. I was blown away at the gift just when i saw it was a S&W revolver but now after doing some research i think i have something special. Thoughts? thanks!

Any S&W as a gift for Christmas is special. A Model 28 with a "S" serial number even more so. It is a great gun and one that deserves to be treasured and shot with the next generation.
Warning, once you shoot and fondle them you will become addicted. I have a standing invitation to the Betty Ford Clinic to deal with my addiction.
Congrats on the great gift. It will be a Christmas you will remember for the rest of your life.

I have HP serial #S326090. It is a 6" with numbered Magnas, box, and papers. My SCSW dates it to 1969, my birth year. Anyone have one close to serial that with a letter? I'm looking for my birth month which is August.
Any help is appreciated.

Well, I replaced the sight blade (thanks for the great deal on the part ToolGuy), and put a set of magnas I had laying around on it (I'm in the process of refinishing the targets). So here's what it looks like right now. I got it for a bid of $419.99 on a local auction site called GunAgents.com. Add $36.54 for the governor and $7.50 for the sight blade and I'm into it for a grand total of $464.03.
Took it to the range for the first time today and got it sighted in.
The weight really does a great job of dampening the recoil of full-boat magnums.
I'm quite happy with it.

It was/is a 6" barrel 28-2. I put on the large walnut stocks and a trigger shoe. Still have the box and the paper work.
I purchase this HP new back in 1972 or 1973 in Christiansburg, VA at the Custom Gun Shop.

New to Boards
I'm new to the S&W forums, but not new to S&W revolvers. In 2014 I rented a Model 27 4" at the local indoor range and loved it. I decided to hunt for one of my own. I saw someone selling a Model 28 Highway Patrolman in a Facebook group for $600. Brand new, never fired, had the box, papers, and tools. I looked it up and saw it was a copy of the 27 with a unique history, so I got it! It was very clean and there's no way it had been fired. I bought it from a sheriff and he told me his dad ran a bank and bought it for protection, but he just stuck it in a drawer. I was dumb and shot it, but only has about 300 rounds through it.
Almost a year later another Highway Patrolman came up for sale. It had more use and holster wear. For $375 I picked it up. I get the love and feel of shooting a Highway Patrolman without worrying about the really good one. I've taken a lot of friends and family to the range and everyone loves the Highway Patrolman. Since then I've also acquired a Model 29 6.5" and a Model 27 6.5", both from the Classic Series. I love both those guns, but they don't quite have the charm of a Model 28.

N548xxx came to me recently. Mint gun, in box, grips numbered to the gun, owners manual, warranty card, etc. No tools though.

I believe it was made in 1967. The grips aren't original. I swapped out the small stocks for these larger ones that fit my hand better. The originals are safely tucked away.

Well I have one to show in this thread now. It's an early N prefix bought from another member here last month. The gun's not perfect but it's nice enough and a fine shooter to boot. Through the years I've had a few .357s but I didn't know what I was missing until I got this old gal.

New to me Model 28-2 #S234239
I believe that it was made around 1963-1964
Any additional info would be appreciated.
Also what are the correct style of Grips I should be looking for?

Craig Diamond magnas are the most likely ones.
You could also move the screw at 6 o'clock to 9 o'clock
And the 9 one to 6

Another!
Just got my 3rd HP today at a great price! 6" 28-2 with target grips. The item looked better than the photos. From the picture I thought there was pitting. Turned out to be dust. As it turns out the gun has never been fired! It looks great except for very slight wear on the end of the barrel; you almost can't see it. Sure made my day!
