I finally bought a couple of model 28's, so I can now post some iron up in this thread too. I bought both off GB at the end of last year, but I just got back in from work and picked them up yesterday evening. After cleaning them up last night, here they are.
First, my 4" barrel gun, serial S317xxx
And my 6" barrel gun, serial N44xxx

Here is my contribution to the cause, N561162. A 4” barreled revolver built in 1979(?). I made some alterations to it but the chassis was pure M28-2.

1958 with forum member-made grips and S&W Border Patrol holster
Edited to add: got my letter, and contrary to all information for nearby serial numbers, it is a 1957

I recently picked up this model 28-2 with a letter of authenticity that states that it shipped from the factory in 1979 to the NY State Police with a plane ramp sight. It also stated that the white outline rear and red ramp front, which the gun has, were added later, and that the NY state Police were often bringing their guns to the factory for special work. The gun is marked NYSP. It has a smooth trigger face and a great d/a trigger pull. It is in pristine shape.

Picked this one up today. N124xx (1970 I suppose). Faint turn line and handling marks. Side plate was very tight which isn't a bad thing.
While the magnas are original and number to the gun, I thought it might handle a bit better with some targets. Not finding what I wanted on eBay but ran across these striking Thai grips. They're some sort of very heavy hardwood that balances the gun nicely. That, and a Ren Wax rubdown and this plain Jane 28-2 looks pretty sharp!

Here's a couple of pics of the 28-2 I recently acquired. It is an S prefix from 1965, and came with the original box, vapor paper, and unopened tool set. It also has the original invoice from the purchase in 1965. The targets are original as listed on box label, but are not numbered to the gun. I have been looking for one for a while, but have been unsuccessful until now. Very pleased with the purchase. A big thank you to forum member Bamabiker for sending me a spare black disk that was missing from the right side grip.

Will Smith and Wesson provide a historical letter for your gun and do you have to pay for it ? Would be curious to see the original purchase info on a Model 28-2.

The Smith and Wesson Historical Foundation now issues letters for S&W hand ejectors.
Yes, there is a fee for the service.
Go to this link for details.

Got this last week. First HP. 28-2 serial S276xxx. So 66 or 67 is my best guess. Wash. State Patrol marked. Looks heavily used as there is finish loss on the barrel and cylinder. Not abused (I hope). Not sure if the target grips are original, but I guess.

Here are a couple of 6-inchers I picked up a few months ago. I guess it is only fitting that they also get posted in the "Mother-Of-All" Model 28 threads.

Great price. That's getting dang close to J-frame Airweight pricing.
Have you checked for matching grip s/n yet?

I only have one M28, my 1978 6" -2.
It was wearing these Pachmayr grips when it was given to me.
I was also given the original Magna stocks that came on the gun.
Then I added a nice set of Target stocks.
And now it rests on my nightstand.
It has spent its entire life in that holster except when I has it drawn from the holster to shoot rabbits.

Here is one to add to the 4 screw non MN data base. Picked it up at the local show this past weekend. Shipped sometime in 57? HP's are very seldom seen in this part of the country, so I jumped at the chance to own this beauty.

S1277xx, late 1954?
Won an auction because of the poor pictures. $599 no box.
When I took it out of the package at the LGS, we all were speechless.
No turn line, no evidence of being fired. But I can assure it fires quite nicely.
I would very much like to find a police marked 4”, 1964 serial.

N1984XX Approx. 1973 4"
Bought this at a gun show in Ohio probably three years ago for $575.00. Caught my eye and have enjoyed it ever since.
4" Barrel, Blued (B), Square Butt (SB), Red Ramp front sight (RR), adjustable White Outline rear sight (WO), Magna Grips, .400 Semi-Target Hammer, .265 Serrated Trigger.
The only thing I could never figure out was the white lettering. I assume someone did that later, but they did a really nice job and it looks original if I didn't know better.

I inherited a 357 Highway Patrolman, 6" barrel, nickel finish. I see references to "4 screw", & "5 screw" what does this indicate?
S/N is S1958xx, any idea of date of manufacture?
TIA

that looks like a factory red insert. Can you confirm? If not, it was superbly done.

Thanks, shrade. Your 4 screw NMM 6 inch is noted. It makes a
total of nine 6 inch Patrolmans along with two 4 inch models in
this thread.

I got stupid and bought 2 4" 28-2's, one in the box with the original receipt from 1967, from the one and only owner. Looks great! The other one has no box or any other stuff with it, but it looks better than the other one, except the ratchet has a little peen on one tooth.
Bottom one is from 73,. and the top one is from 1967.I sure wish either of them had cost $450-500. The cheaper one was $700! Pics will follow...

S&W Highway Patrolman
Hi, brand new to the forum. I came across this looking for info on my .357. I've been searching, unsuccessfully, for information regarding year, model and estimated value.
I inherited this about 12 years ago and since it has only seen the inside of a box in a closet as we moved and traveled around. I did finally take it out last August, and having only fired semi-auto, was surprised with how comfortable it was to shoot.
I do realize that it desperately needs to be cleaned and better cared for but if anyone here can give me a better idea of age and an estimate of value, I would appreciate it greatly.
s/n: s 1120xx
model: G 2727 1 ???

Welcome to the forum. You gun was made in 1954 0r 1955 probably 1954 which was the first year for the Highway Patrolman. Clean it up and shoot the Heck out of it, It is a fine gun.
If you know a gunsmith, you might have them look at it or at least watch a youtube video on what to watch for when buying a revolver.

2020 Values
So what might be the gun show retail value of a 28-2 3 screw the attractive dull bluing with correct serial # box? Revolver is a 6", perfect in most every way accept what looks like a slight impact & finish scratch about the size of a little finger nail on the side plate. Seller would not accept my 629-3 six inch and 100$. Could someone repair the side plate defect and match the bluing correctly? Firm price was $750.

OK, I searched but can't find the answer. Was it ever determined what finish "BH" means on Mod. 28 box end labels? Thanks

“BH” is for the Satin Blue finish the 28’s get.
27’s and 29’s usually got the “BT” Bright Blue finish.
At least that’s how I understand it.

To add to what RGNewell posted, G2727 1 ??? isn't a model number. It is an assembly number marked on several matching hand-fitted parts at the factory to make sure they get all the right parts back together to be assembled into a gun.
Yours has no model number because it was manufactured before 1958 when model numbers were first assigned.
Yours has just a model name - it is a Highway Patrolman
