Thought it was time for me to post my 5 screw 4" Pre 28 # S 111330.It is dressed in Keith Brown grips with the original grips(numbered to the HP)sitting next to it.
Just picked up my 2nd. 5 screw Pre M-28 ser. #S 113886.the grips are numbered to the gun.
This, like the other Pre 28 is a 98/99% cond. gun.

I've really enjoyed this thread, more so since I picked up a 28-2 a few days ago, that has some history. The serial number list at the beginning helped me to narrow down a time frame the gun was made.
My 28-2 is a S/N 94XXX and I probably paid more for it than I should have. However, it belonged to a friend who was a sheriff's captain and it was his duty gun. He retired and shortly after, passed away from a tragic accident. His wife decided to sell his guns and this was one of them.
The challenge I have right now is whether to leave this war horse as is with the holster wear, worn rear slight blade, etc. versus a rebuild to a shootable presentation grade. The grips are worn medallion grips with the usual wear a cop would have for a holstered gun, getting in and out of cars, bluing worn in a couple of spots and so on.
Has anyone done a full "restoration" of a later date gun like this?

Guess I'll add another for the data base.
Run of the mill 6" bbl matte blue 28-2
Serial number N197***
Came with magna grips, but I replaced them years ago with targets.
This gun must have a million miles of riding in patrol cars, ranch pickups, and on horseback.
If I could only have one handgun, this would be it.

I’ll add my shooter 4” 28-2 from 1973, N1978xx.
She’s been messed with, but mechanically she’s 100%. One heck of a revolver!

Christmas in February.
Purchased a 6" Highway Patrolman SN # S116XXX, 5 screw, all original, all #'s matching, with non relieved diamond targets along with the original black leather basket weave duty leather this week. 1954 or 1955 I believe. Darn near impossible to fine anymore in my neck of the woods.
I think it was probably made the same day as BBBS' 6" HP. The SN's are real close.
Allen-Frame
Please add mine to the list!

I have a 4 inch and bought a 28-2 in 6 inch yesterday on Gunbroker. I should get it in about a week to give me the set of 98% guns that I wanted.

Hey Gang,
Best thread on the intertubes!
I picked up my Model 28-2 last week through a private sale. This gun is my first handgun (Now in Texas BUT Canadian born hillbilly & resident for 31 years - lots of shotguns and rifles - but no handguns for obvious reasons.) I had originally planned on getting a 686 or a Ruger GP 100, but the Highway Patrolman found me. Been out a few times with it and it is one of the most comfortable guns I have ever used. Glad I was able to get one, and now I want another (with original grips). I hate the grips mine has from an aesthetic viewpoint, but they sure are nice to shoot with. Just wish the S&W logo was not partially covered This will be my primary home defense weapon & also my primary range gun.
Some pictures and then a query about maintenance if you folks don't mind..
Model 28-2
SN: N567XXX
Edited to add: 4"
Okay now for the question (and picture below). You can see a bit of corrosion on the next picture - on the cylinder and near the hammer on the frame. How should I go about fixing this and making sure it does not spread? (Links are a fine answer here )
Thanks!

First off - Welcome!! And congrats on picking up a fine revolver.
Second – I’d spray the area with a good penetrating oil like CLP or Strike-Hold; or WD40 and Mouse Milk and scrub it with a nylon brush to remove the corrosion and then clean it off and wipe it down with a good oil to prevent any further corrosion.

Hey snw_357, that's a classic N frame and a great pic.
If that was all you had it'd be all you'd need.

Thanks for this thread, Very informative! Picked up a four screw non-model marked Highway Patrolman serial number S177096, 1957 early 1958, six inch barrel, numbered to gun diamond magnas, no box. Just a bit oh holster wear at muzzel and oddly enough none on cylinder, very lite drag line on cylinder. Perfect bore and seems to have been shot very little. No rust or pitting, grips in great shape. Cleaned up to pert near new looking.

Sounds like a duty gun. Worn daily and never fired. See it is good that some cops only shoot twice a year at the range

Thanks for honoring these classic Highway Patrolman revolvers ... and the namesake men and women who serve.

As a side note. I am now shooting my Model 28 in USPSA Revolver and IDPA SSR at the club level. Not competitive but to quote MickeyD's "I'm lovin it!"
over 30 years of service and the poor ol' gun still gets no rest lol.

Thanks for this thread... I have a couple of lonesome 4" 28s languishing in the back of the safe... now I need to wake them up and see where they fall in history. (The 4" 28 was my first S&W revolver, bought back in 1971 when I turned 21!)

I posted my gun already on here, but I just got my grips refinished by VM on this board. I just had to post again in this thread to show the great work that VM did on my grips.
I like my 28-2...

Heres my latest purchase. SN N5497XX I guess 1979 vintage. Came with ugly rubber grips. I thought it was worse off until I cleaned her up. She will be a good shooter, thats what I wanted. Bought it in a local shop for $350 OTD no box.

This is my other 28, bought new by my dad in 1972. Carried this as a part time Deputy Sheriff back in the day. Have all the original accessories, box, cleaning rod, papers even the original bill of sale and the box of ammo thats on the original bill of sale. Id never sell this gun and I dont really want to make a regular shooter out of it. Thats why I bought the other one. Anyway she was bought 10/17/72 SN N537XX. And it cost $112.00, a box of Winchester 357 mag was 7.90 and 38 wad cutters were $2.25 a box.

I'm sometimes a little slow to follow through, but as promised here are both of my Highway Patrolmen / Model 28's.
The first is a 1959 28 no dash, Serial S195097 shipped in November of '59 to Arizona Hardware, Phoenix, AZ. It was my first birthday gun.
My latest 28 is a 28-2, NYSP marked. The gun, Serial N548027, shipped to the New York State Police in July, 1979.

N197*** 28-2 6" bbl magna stocks purchased barely used somewhere around 1973.
Lots of miles on a horse and ATV. Not shot a lot.
Magnas still in the safe.

MOD 28
6" barrel
S/N S 2156xx (MFG 1960-61, a birthday gun)
4 screw
Shot very little. Locks up bank vault tight when cocked, with .004" cylinder gap. Matching Magna diamond grips (S/N stamped on inside of grips).
It also came with a set of Pachmayr gripper grips.
Not a 28-1, but close.

Very informative thread and great pics, but I've gone through all 17 pages and have not found a variation like I picked up recently.
28-2, ser# N5973XX, recessed but not pinned.
Would this not have been made circa '79-'80, and didn't the -3 bring in the change to non-pinned and recessed? Any info would be appreciated. Hasty picture below..

The frame is marked -2? I can see a -3 using up old -2 cylinders. I'd like to know too.
Here's a neglected 5-screw HP I recently rescued. I still don't have it completely cleaned up but it's mechanically great and one sweet shooter. Serial number S1117xx
