Well, sounds nice, but your photos didn't come through. We have some threads about photobucket.
Edit: nice revolver!! You got a really great deal. Beautiful gun and a great price!
Best Regards, Les

I finally got another 28-2 to replace the very early 28-2 I had 35 years ago. It's a near duplicate of the old one, this one comes from around 70-71 and has a much better finish on it. Target hammer and trigger, wearing it's new Altamont rosewood grips that fit so well they are a huge pain to take off. This gun is in great shape, lockup and timing are excellent.

I bought one just like yours, 28 no dash 6" 4 screw, S195843, a 1959 also! It just arrived at my FFL, I'll go take a look Tuesday. I'm very excited to see it! Here's some great photos taken FFL seller (Max French).
These are great guns for shooting and collecting. Cheers!

I was given a 28-2 N267xxx by a friend who owed me a little bit of money some years back. It was nickel plated at some point in its life. The nickel was fading in places really bad and flaking at the muzzle. Shoots great. But after holding onto it for a number of years, a friend gave me a gift certificate to Fords to get it restored to its original HP blue. Fords tells me they are about to ship it to my FFL, so I will post follow up pictures. Until then, I have a not great picture below. The magnas are not original to the gun--I got it with rubber Hogues.

I think I have this one buried in this thread somewhere, it is my 4in first year highway patrol I hope it is worth seeing again. I know there are folks on here that are real collectors and put my meager collection to shame, but I still love to show the ones I have. this was my first HP I traded it to a friend and he kept in his safe a year and never took it out. I got a chance to bring it back home and it will never leave again!

I don't have it in hand yet, but it's in a layaway bin with my name on it.
1954 Highway Patrolman, with a 6" barrel, and original Magna stocks. Looks like it's been used for what it was made for.

Here is my contribution to this thread:
S/N: S18890x Four Screw
According to its letter: "Shipped from the factory on March 30, 1959 and delivered to Union Hardware & Metal Co., Los Angeles, CA. Shipped with 6 inch barrel, brush blue finish, and checkered walnut grips. Records indicate that this order was for 10 units in this configuration. Target grips were added after being originally shipped from the factory."
Any thoughts on this 10-revolver order, the hardware store, or what agency in CA might have used this revolver would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I maybe way off base but being an old Bullseye shooter and the mention of target grips added my mind goes right to 50's era shooting matches. I wonder of the LA Police Dept had a target shooting team. Somewhere on youtube, a few years ago I watched an old 50's era film which showed folks shooting Bulleye type matches at a range. If memory serves me (and it doesn't as well these days), I believe there were both police and civilians at the range and I only recall seeing them shooting revolvers. It also showed them collecting and processing the fired .38SPL brass, casting bullets and reloading ammo for future matches, I wouldn't have a clue what terms to search for now, I stumbled across it while looking at gun videos. It may possibly have been an old NRA or police dept video, possibly...
You might try searching LA county clerk records if they are available online, many counties now have records available online where you can look up deeds. You might be able to find out who owned that hardware store, from there see if you can find family members who might have some info and maybe even remember that order. Or contact the police dept's in the area and see if they had teams within the dept, might get lucky and get someone who likes to chat target matches or ask if they have anyone who acts as a dept historian. If they went to a law enforcement dept, even for target shooting I would think they would have been marked "Property of XYZ Dept." but then again maybe not if they were never issued for carry or if each officer paid for them just for target shooting.
Please let us know what you find out!

Well this was bugging me, I found a colorized version of that old video in the middle of the night. It was farther back then I remembered, 1938. Note, don't try some of these shooting skills at home, You'll shoot your eye out kid!
(Copy and paste link if you want to download it --> youtube.com/watch?v=jDP8BRSEjrA )
ETA: You'll see my memory is not as reliable as it use to be, no civilian shooters and it appears there were some 1911's (?) being fired toward the end, the video is not quite as I remembered. (Has anyone seen my keys?)

Thanks for posting this. I don't care how good of marksman my co-workers are, I'd never trust them enough for some of those shots.

Yeah, Amen to that! Did you notice where the officer had the chalk sticks in his ears? Did you see how close the shot to the left was! Yikes! "Oops, sorry about that" just wouldn't cut it!
OK, back on topic, I'm going to get in trouble for derailing the thread. To the admins, if you want to delete these posts please PM me first, I'd like to start a new thread first where folks can continue chatting this topic and just post a link here to redirect folks, or you can start the thread and move the posts. Or just delete them all together, it's your forum! Sorry about going off topic folks....

While I love the magna's on the four inch, they just weren't working out on the six inch HP. I was shooting better with the shorter barrel, just better balanced for me. My $86 targets from ebay were delivered today and I'm confident they're going to help my shooting with the longer barrel.

Hello to everyone on the thread here; I stumbled onto a Nickel version of the Highway Patrolman yesterday. This one is a 28-2 # N1894xx, in 6 inch , Target stocks, counterbored cyl, Pinned barrel. no insert in the ramp front sight.
I think the rather unique point on this particular piece is the Model 28-2 stamping on the frame was struck twice!
I will try and get some decent pictures of it to share with everyone here on the forum.

Welcome to the forum, Greywulf4570, I'm sure you will enjoy that classic Highway Patrolman!!
You ought to post an introduction over on the "new members" sub forum. I'm sure that everyone would like to get to know you....
Edit... I just saw that you joined some time ago, but apparently just posted for the first time...
Again, welcome from West Virginia!!!
Best Regards, Les

28 No Dash number S19078X. Obviously not an issued service weapon since it has no holster wear or blueing degradation at all. Only a turn line and bottom of the stocks dings. One of the best deals on a revolver I've ever done.

I have yet to take a real glamor shot but I'm really loving this 28-2. Just shot her for the first time last night. As expected, the trigger was butter smooth and single action was downright scary.

New stocks for one of my 4's. It's 1975 that did not have it's original magna's. And in spite of all of the "magna on magnum's" love, even my not so huge hands love target grips for their intended purposes. And these Goncalo Alves were a $81 ebay score. Only needed a little TLC.
...the 442 had been in my pocket all morning for a doctor's appointment and errands..

Would love to see pics of the Model 28-2 double striking, never heard or seen that before. Is one stamping much lighter then the other? Wonder if it was a bounce of the hammer when struck? But I would think if struck by hand they would use a dead blow hammer to stop any bounce. Just curious.

The ultimate Highway Patrolman thread.including N frame ser# ranges
The evolution of my 4” 28-2
Was a drunken (at least buzzed) gunbroker purchase. I figured it’d be a damn shame to let a good gun suffer. I bought it with plans to have it cleaned up.
I had it a few months and decided I wanted to have it reblued. Sent it to a place a couple of hours from the house. The smith said all he could basically do is blast the spray paint off and reblue. I didn’t care too much, and the turnaround time he quoted was pretty quick, so I sent it off. Also picked up new shoes for it as I hate the hogue mono.
Still ugly, but much less ugly. About a year or so after getting it back, the rear sight wasn’t adjusting, so I took it to a local Smith to get that fixed. He said he could do it no problem, then asked if I wanted to send it out to have it polished and blued. He said it would look like a new gun. I had a little extra cash, so I said sure, and he sent it off for me. Came back about 6 weeks later. They did a hell of a job, but they still couldn’t get all the pitting on the cylinder, and basically all of the logos were buffed out.
All in all, it’s one of my favorite wheelies, and it’s already best so no fears of turn lines or wear.

Here is a few photos of my recently rescued Highway Patrolman, The Model number has been struck twice, I think it was made around the 1971 timeframe maybe, it was pretty filthy when I first acquired it. I managed to get the baked on deposits out of the chambers with a mix of Kerosene and Marvel Mystery oil.

a few more pictures of my Highway Patrolman.
I confess , I did not know much about these pieces until I discovered this one.
It really stuck out huge among a row of some 30 polymer semi autos on the shelf of used hardware.
The last picture in this bunch is what it looked like the day I brought it to the house.
It cleaned up ok, and after careful inspection, It is now ready to take to the range.

Picked up a nice looking Highway Patrolman. Serial number dates to 1967: S2855xx
Seller figures unfired or very little use.
Haven’t got my hands on it yet but here are a couple of pictures from the seller. I’ll do a nice photo shoot when I get it this week.

I didn't know if I'd ever be able to join this elite club. Here's my new to my safe 4" 28-2. SN N28355x. It's everything you folks have said it'd be!

Congrats. What is that propping up the gun? Looks like a S&W cigar tube.
I need one of those.

That's a "prop rod", some of the guys on the forum sell them, I believe.
Normally 75Vette needs something a little longer to prop up his Smiths:
Best Regards, Les

In 1977, I started my LE career with a 4" M28-2. As young, low paid cops are apt to do, I traded it away for a Model 19 as soon as I found one a couple of years after I started (they didn't exactly grow on trees in those days). I wish I had that 28-2 back. I'll run across another some day, I'm sure. Until then I'll just continue to look at all of the pictures here and drool on myself.
UPDATE:
I found and bought a 28-2 in very good condition. Timing was very slightly off on one chamber, so I put a new hand in it and re-timed it to my liking. I'm considering sending it to S&W after I get moved and having a new bluing job put on it.

Les is correct. I bought it from a forum member in the classified section.
