Thought you all would find this interesting. I bought this off a friend a while back. When I inspected it I found "STO" inscribed on the frame just about the serial #. STO stands for State Traffic Officer, the official title of a California Highway Patrolman. May be the official title of other state highway patrol officers...I don't know. This pistol has the well worn look of a carried revolver.

Default Got to shoot my HP for the first time!

I was short on ammo, but I've picked up some since, but I got to test my HP for the first time last weekend. I only had six .38s and four .357 rounds in my case since I was actually just taking it to show my dad and not actually planning to shoot. I was thrilled that it performed just like everyone on here said they do. Straight as and arrow with a trigger like butter!

I'm curious, are the n.m.m. models worth any more or less than any of the other versions of the HP/28?

Could anyone clue me in as to what the 75967 stamped on the frame and the yoke means if anything? The gun was made in 67 so I'm thinking date of manufacture...Sept 67? Thanks

Those would be assembly numbers.

Thought I would make another contribution. Here is a 5 screw 6 inch Highway Patrolman with non-relieved diamond target stocks.

All the numbers match including the stocks!

Default S&W Model 28-2 Highway Patrolman

I picked up my 2nd grail gun today--a S&W model 28-2 HP 6" with the original grips. SN N544XXX makes the born on date 1978 or 79.

I haven't shot it yet, but I'm sure it will not disappoint.

Garry

Pictured with original grips and Pachmayer rubber grips.

My one and only HP contribution is this 6" beauty, from "about" 1958, my birth year. Serial # 1890XX, it's close enough that I feel very fortunate to have found it. It's a 6" shooter grade, just as I wanted. However it didn't have the target hammer I wanted, so I bought one from a fellow member and fortunately it was a "drop in" fit. That's 2 blessings.

Then I was fortunate again when I was selected the winner of a Karma drawing here for two 27/28 N frame speedloaders. Awesome! A fourth favor from the Good Lord was when I was chosen in yet another Karma drawing for a Tyler T-grip. The numbers matching magnas didn't really fit my hand so well until now. This Highway Patrolman is my own personal reminder that God still loves me.

My 28-2 6" Highway Patrolman 1967:

Should this revolver have the diamond stocks or was 67 right where the changeover occurred?

I recently acquired a pre 28 from a forum member who is also a friend, having acquired many S&W revolvers over the past 3 years from him. My new pre-28 is 6" with all numbers matching including the stocks. The color is almost black and would be rated 99%. It was shipped 6/11/54 to Stoeger Arms Co., NYC. SN S110462. It is my first 28 but not my last. Sorry no pictures.

Someone burgled my car and stole a highway patrolman in 1970, Jacksonville, Florida. I have no idea what the details of it were, other than it had a short barrel. I used it when I stood watch at Cecil field Naval Air Station. Someone got a good revolver.

Picked up this S prefix 28-2 today. Has some nice Herret's on it. Cant find a single scratch, but it has plenty of holster wear on the muzzle and cylinder. Bore is basically perfect. Must have been carried a lot and shot very little. Probably a service gun. I'll take some better pics when I take it to the range in a couple days. Thanks for looking.

Default Need some info...

I'm being offered a 28-2 w/ SN N85641 which, from what I can tell, was made between 1969 and 1972 from refrencing the first page of this thread.

Anyone have more info, basic things to look for and perhaps a value?

I just picked up this 28-2 from the local shop yesterday. The serial number is N88xxx, so I am guessing that puts the date of manufacture around 1982 or 1983.

It came with Pachmayr grips, but I still had my old set of target grips from the first Model 28 that I owned back in the late 70’s, so I threw those on.

Default My 28-2

Picked this up about 4-6 years ago. Serial number N4740, the big book says 1969-1972, I'm thinking with the low number 1969 would be possible.

My 28-2, N7954 shipped August 1970. So probably before then.

Best Regards, Les

Jtown,

A couple questions about your Highway Patrolman.

Is it Model Marked?

Have you posted about this gun earlier in this thread?

I am interested in the N.M.M. 4 screw Patrolmans.

Thanks,
Gunnison

Default My Three Sons

Here's my three 28's, two no dashes and one unfired 28-2. The 28's seem to become increasingly popular, well as least with me!

Sold my 28-2 in the early 80s at a gun show. It had a RR front sight, WO rear sight, TH, TT, TS, and action job. Always regretted I sold it. Well, today I finally replaced it. Functionally, it's fine. But not the prettiest 28 in the world. It's going to be a shooter. Dang glad I bought it. Still have target stocks and a presentation case for it.

Default Inherited a H.P 28-2 looking for info

Hi. New to the group. Just inherited a 28-2 sn N39,*** very low serial numner for N I assume based on what the chart shows. I would never get rid of it for anything, as sentimental value far outweighs any money. Wondering however why mine would have 2 different numbers. One below the stock in typical place and a different all together on the lower part of the arm opposite the place where the model and matching number for the stock are? Also looks like a seperate stamp "G11" with a newer looking stamp kit.

Welcome to the Forum, HP!!! We are glad to have your here. The serial number is the one stamped on the butt of the revolver. The other number is probably the assembly number, which was stamped on various parts of the gun during the manufacturing process.

There are experts here who will help you with this issue.

Best Regards, Les

Default I found someone's 28-2 box.

Not sure quite how to go about this, but here goes.

I ran across an auction for a Model 28-2 box. Thought about this thread, and also that the box should, if possible, be united once again with the gun that came in it. So I bought it.

I don't think it belongs in the for sale section. I'd only want it to go to whomever has the correct gun.

So if you have 28-2 S/N # S263760, leave me a message and a photo of the serial number on your 28-2.

Moderators, PLEASE let me know if this is in any way afoul of any Forum guidelines.

Here is another one 4 the list. 28-2 4inch blue, non original grips, standard trigger and hammer. Ser# N41860. Add this one to the other 5 or 6 ,have not been in the safe for awhile. Sixty nine to seventy, or so. Book tends lump 69-72 as time frame. 28s rule

Default 4 screw NMN

I recently acquired an 85%+ 4 screw non model number HP, serial number S1753** 6" barrel with later model target stocks but otherwise in unmodified condition. I don't know what stocks came on this HP originally though I would guess they were Magna's considering the target stocks that came on it appear to be 70's vintage. I am considering lettering this one. If I read the serial number range correctly this one was made sometime in 1956. I will take some photos and post soon. Thanks to everyone for sharing on this thread, the information has been invaluable. My Dad's 28-2 was the first center fire handgun I ever fired and since then HP's have held a special place in my heart.
Best regards to all,
Morgan

Gunnison my Highway Patrolman has only been posted in this thread once. Definitely not model marked.

Welcome to the Forum, Full Moon Shooter.

I also feel that your HP came with Magnas.

I was able to find time to completely disassemble and clean my new HP today. Everything looked good on the inside. I also took some photos of the frame markings as well as some overall shots. Not sure how to post photos yet, trying to do it directly f on my phone. Any advice on getting the photos posted would be appreciated. I also saw Gunnison's post to Jtown that was reposted. Gunnison, if there are any specific details on my HP you would like let me know.
Thanks,
FMS

So as I was reading my previous post I noticed I fat fingered my key board and made an error on my serial number. It is actually S1763** which puts it into the 1957 year range. Would this make it on of the last NMM 4 screw HP?

Picked up another 28-2 at Gettysburg show Saturday, N26121 extremely nice only very short ring, firing pin ring not even scratched. Has Target footballs, standard trigger and hammer, no box. Nicest 28 I have handled. price 599.00 out the door. Add to the list.

Hey phortykal, that's a really nice specimen. It's been a while since you requested info, but if you were able to pick it up, congratulations! Do the grips number to the gun? If so that would be a bonus, but if not they are still period correct.

And welcome to the Forum!

I have serial number S 109945 it has a 4 inch barrel. It has a non factory nickel finish and a beautiful set of old sambar stag grips, it shows a good bit of holster wear but it shoots great. I will post a picture of it when I figure out how.

Posted before, but this a good excuse to post again. Left to right, my '72, '79, and '75 HP's.

And as posted on another thread, just painted the front sights on the two that I shoot.
