Older stainless steel lends itself to a high polish while the more modern stainless surface resists polishing. Can anyone explain this phenomenon? How can one polish the new stainless surface?

S&W changed the alloy mixture years back to deter home "gunsmiths" from RUINING a nice revolver by turning it into a mirror.

Sorry...Polished SS Smiths is one of my pet peeves. Couldn't resist.

Sorry to say that this ugly Stainless gun is NEWER and yet when I polished it it came out just fine.
I have not had any problems with new or old Stainless guns.

If you don't like polished stainless then I guess you won't like this:

Or this:

Well damn. I don't have a photo of my 659.

Are you tryig to polish the bead-blasted finishes?! Those aren't just "newer"; they're different.

I believe that it is bead blasted. Can those be polished?

Theoretically, yes. Practically speaking, no.

Yes, why would anyone want the beauty of nickel with the practicality and durability of stainless.

What will they think of next? Cars without hand cranks?

WE,

BEAUTY is in the eyes of the beholder. NICKLE is NOT pretty...it's GAUDY. Real guns are BLUED.

I love the look of a deep blue or bead-blasted stainless but I've never really liked the "normal" brushed stainless that much. My 686 was looking tired and a little battered after 23 years and probably 10,000 rounds, and a bit of buffing brought a lot of life back into it.

500 MagNut -

What did you use to polish your 625? How long did it take? I have a 65 LadySmith that is need of some love. I carried it for a while and the finish did not stand up very well. Any advice would be appreciated.

It’s a model 649 (38 Special) with a 3 inch barrel. I bought it used. I believe the barrel is from a model 60 and the unfluted cylinder might be from something else too. I removed the front sight because it shot real low and a belly gun probably doesn’t need a front sight anyway. I added the bronze Tlyer T grip and a Don Collins Custom grip and did some polishing. I think it came out real nice.

I will rub a little "Mothers" on my 686 and 657-4 from time to time...cleans them right up.

Looks like a 3" Heavy Barreled Model 649, Also appears to be missing the front sight too..
Also note smooth cylinder..
Very Cool Indeed!!

The barrel has been changed, the cylinder changed, don't have the original grips and you removed the front sight! The S&W purist are going to excommunicate you. You better sell me that gun for $100 quick. HA, great looking little gun!
