I was wondering if $450 was a good price for an older S&W Model 66-2, 2 3/4" barrel in SS in great mechanical condition but needing cleaned up a bit, with one speed loader and Rogers Grips. What do you all think?

You would be hard pressed to find one cheaper. If you want it you better go for it. Not too many around for sale and they don't make these bad boys any more. Stainless is very forgiving. Flitz or Mother's mag and alum polish will do wonders in cleaning them up.

But, I don't need one either.

Regardless, I'd say that's about top dollar for that gun.

I don't mean to sound stupid, but what does non-pinned, and non-recessed mean concerning revolvers? Why do I want them to be?

Thanks!

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong here, but I believe it must be 2 1/2" or 3".

I'd say that's a good price, for a 3" model. If it's a 2 1/2" model, I would pass. I know someone that recently sold a (P&R) 66-1, in 2 1/2", with original box & goodies, for $475. It was in new condition.

I am sorry, I have not gotten your email, and after I sent it, I thought I should have just posted it here instead of bothering you. I am sorry for the indiscretion.

No big deal...I deleted my post about answering your e-mail questions. You're new, we're here to help.

Your e-mail didn't bother me...until after I answered it and then saw the same question posted here.

Don't worry...I'm over it.

In my locality I don't see many of these in whichever barrel length for sale. I guess it depends on where you live and the shops you have available and there is always the internet available.

Here's what I sent you...

Hi Eric,

Up until about 1982, S&W barrels were threaded into the frame and then a pin was driven through the frame to locate the barrel/eliminate any chance of it un-screwing. Newer guns are only threaded with what is referred to as a "crush-fit".

Also, cylinders on magnum guns (and rimfires), were recessed...the cartridge rims sunk in flush to the back of the cylinder. Pinned and recessed were eliminated at the same time....although there were some "transitional" guns that will have one feature and not the other...S&W was using up the parts they had while converting over.

Nothing wrong with a 66-2 it will work fine, but a 66-1 (P&R) will be worth more because of the increased labor it took to build it.

Collectors generally like P&R guns...they were built more by hand, more hand fitting, etc.

It's a S&W thing...Colts and Ruger never had these features.

Pinned refers to a pin through frame where the barrel enters it. Recessed means the cylinder holes are counter sunk to completely enclose the rim of each shell. These features stopped at the 66-1 model and are taken as an indication of the craftsmanship and quality of manufacture for these models and are therefore preferred by collectors and others. Model 66s with or without these features should function equally well. But as G-Mac stated it can be a price point feature for a lot of buyers.

I bought one of these 5 years ago for $300, with the box. It was a much carried US Forest Service surplus gun and was filthy dirty and caked with junk under the sight assembly. I partially disassembled and gave it a thorough cleaning---was amazed by the pretty piece under the junk I sprayed away. I put a set of com-pac rubber grips on it and carried it as my CCW piece for a while, and then it became my 'car gun' when I purchased a Kahr PM 40 for my carry piece.

I sold it 1 year ago for $400 (so made a $100 profit), with the box and the factory and com-pac grips-----and nearly immediately regretted doing so. $450 might be just a little bit high, but not out of line if it has the box and is in good condition. The 66 is a wonderful tool, and does lots of things well.....I wish I still had mine. Good luck!

Was this Forest Service gun a snub, as the Compac grips suggest, or a four-inch?

Thanks,

Pinned: (cross wise pin- pins the barrel to the frame...you can see the head of the pin)

Recessed: (where the rim of the cartridge sits when inserted into the cylinder)

I traded for a 66-3 2 3/4 bbl. last spring. The price was $595.99 which was a bit high. I wanted it bad. That is good but not great. I would pick it up because you don't see them much and folks want them.

Get it, shoot it, love it. I'm wearing mine today.

They evidently won't ever make them as nice as that 66-2 snubby again, so grab one while you can.

Sweetest revolver to carry that I own. Regards 18DAI.
