I recently purchased a model 681 no dash that was a police trade-in. The gun was a little rough, had some timing issues, and had not been modified under the 1987 recall. When shooting magnums, the primers did indeed try to flow back into the firing pin hole.

I contacted S&W to ask about the recall modification. The first guy I talked to said that since it had been more than 10 years since the recall, it was no longer being honored. If I wanted to send it in, it would be at my cost.

I called back to complain to a supervisor, and talked with the nicest woman. Kelly told me they would indeed honor the recall, no matter how long ago it was, and immediately sent me a shipping label.

I sent in the 681, along with a note asking them to look at the timing issue, as it was failing to carry up. I also asked that the internals be looked over and any problems be repaired as well, and to just contact me with the final price for all the repairs.

A week and a half went by, and I had not received a phone call, or letter from S&W letting me know what the additional repairs would cost.

Monday afternoon, the gun was delivered by UPS. A neat little 'M' was stamped on the yoke, and a letter with the gun explained that the hand had been replaced free of charge.

I know some people have had problems with them, but I could not be more thankful, or impressed with S&W.

One thing about the 681 did bother me, but I have since fixed it by picking up an original Tyler T-grip for it. Now it finally looks and feels right.

Nice gun and great service. When I had the same thing happen to me, I sent the lady a thank you card for taking care of me.
Here is my SANIB 681 (sorry about the miss label).

Nice 681 and glad to hear you had such a positive experience with S&W customer service! They are like that every time I need them and they always refuse to accept any money from me for small parts I've needed such as a grip screw, sideplate screw, etc.

Nice 681 !! The agency I used to work for had one that had not been used since the early 90s (and only used for one recruit in the academy, so the round count was less than 500 rounds). I was allowed to purchase it eariler this year. It's a 681 no dash.

From reading here, I knew it had not been updated by S&W, so I gave them a call. I also told the service person that I wanted an action job done. They said that they would send a shipping label and pay for shipping due to the recall. I declined because I also wanted to send a 625 back for an action job and wanted to use one box.

The factory returned the 625 after a couple of weeks and the 681 took three weeks longer. The wait was worth it. It is now one of my favorites. You can't beat a fixed sighted revolver. I work for an investigative agency now and they issue Glocks. If I could, I would carry the 681 in a heartbeat and not feel undergunned in the least.

That's a beautiful 681!

It's too bad you didn't get GOOD customer service from the first person you talked to though...His response sounded official; how many folks would not have known to call back and complain to someone else?
