Dirty Harry Shoulder Holster
Getting Harry's revolver is no problem. But OH MAN...try and find the shoulder holster!!! I had one back in the early 80s. Very nicely made and it even had the cutout for the cylinder. It was kinda tricky to adjust, because it used leather ties to make the adjustments with. IF you can find one now, they are selling for $500-$1000!!!
More than the cost of a Model 29!!!!

Great holsters - they stay close to the body and are very comfortable. I have one for a 4" 29, but I carry a 4" 686 in it.

I think it was Cattle Baron Leather out of Texas. I'm sure they went out of business years ago.

Okay...here's a thought...IF there is enough interest in this holster, there's a chance I MAY be able to get a holster company to duplicate it. Not sure what it would cost, though. Would depend on how many wanted it. Just a thought. I'm contacting the holster company now to explore the possibilities.

A friend of mine loaned me one back in the late 1970s...that was THE fastest shoulder rig ever made for a long barrel Smith. It had a very interesting attachment strap to the belt...it was very wide, kind of tear drop shape. The holster was made to ride very low with the cylinder just above the waist, not way up high with the grip under the arm... The rear attacmnet strap was meant to take the weight, not the shoulder straps..
I believe the original company who made the holster was Cattle Barron Leather who then went out of business and then Lawman started producing the rig...or it was the otherway around. The second company also did the holster in black and was called the Marauder...was even made for 1911s.

I don't think that will happen
It would be a VERY limited run and ONLY for N-frames. Maybe if it becomes more popular it could be done for the smaller frames or maybe it would become a standard catalog item. I just want to see if we can get it in N for right now. Harry never carried the smaller guns

Sign me up.
I've been using a Bianchi X-15 I replaced the elastic strap with a leather strap that has a belt attachment. It's real nice but I'd like one like the Lawman.

I used an old safariland for N frame back when. a friend had one marked S&W for a 4" from late 60's/early 70's (it looked very much like the one in the movie), bianchi had one very similar to "calihand's". all the ones I tried were low slung as said earlier. the cylinder was just above the belt line. needed a long jacket to cover 'if' you carried it for work. I stayed with the safariland 'cause of the lining, the bianchi wore the bluing too quick. I started with a 6" colt then went to the 29. the colt suffered a bit too much so it was reblued and the 29 stayed in the safariland shoulder or belt holsters.

I've been collecting these things for years and the true original used by Clint Eastwood in the movie was made by Bucheimer-Clark. (I had one at the time for my 6" Md. 27.) Bucheimer was an east coast holster mfr. who purchased Clark, an LA area holster mfr., and then combined their product line. Cattle Baron and Lawman Leather came into play after Bucheimer/Clark went out of business.
They did in fact make these same holsters for 4" K-frame guns and sold them to the military because I have one made during the Vietnam War, complete with the Gov't inventory number stamped inside the leather.
I also have some older Clark shoulder holsters (1940's era) and it is easy to trace the development of this holster once you start with the Clark holsters and work your way forward.
As for someone making a copy of the holster, the big problem is the shape of the flat, somewhat C-shaped, retention spring that encompasses the revolver's cylinder and is sewn inside the holster. It is the secret to the whole design and without it, the holster is more or less just another under the armpit holster.
All The Best,
Frank W. James

Thanks for the history, Frank! I seem to recall there having been some litigation between Cattle Baron and Lawman, way back when, with respect to this holster design. I'd love to have one for 6" and one for 4" N-frames. I've seen a couple of the US Gov't ones you mentioned, carrying 4" 66s when I saw them, best I can remember.

If I can ever find more verifiable history on the Clark company, I was going to do an article sometime on these holsters, but so far I haven't found much. I have enough holsters already to well illustrate the work, just then to know who started Clark and when. Although I have found patents that someone at Clark filed in the 1920's for different holster designs.

Interesting how the two handed grip has changed in the past 35 years. This is really just a stabilized one handed grip that Mr. Callahan has adopted.

While i don't know where SRT got his, I know a novelty shop here in town that used to sell them, as well as Joe Friday's LAPD detective badge and a few others. Yes 2211 is Inspector Callahan's badge number.

I thought Harry carried Dade speedloaders? Was HKS in business way back then?

From what I've seen in his movies, it's HKS that he used. There is a definite "twisting motion" when he reloads the revolver. That would indicate HKS. Also, in "Magnum Force" there is a very good view of them when he hands them over to his Lieutenant in the car. During the competiton on the range, the "bad cops" all used Safariland speedloaders where you just insert them in the cylinders and push the center button. Tyne Daley also used Safariland in "The Enforcer" with her Colt Python. The Dade loaded the cylinder like a Safariland. Insert and push. Bad thing about the Dade was it was prone to losing cartridges if dropped.

Deputy,
Any chance of your friend Shelly making a run of these exact same holsters for an L frame? In my case a 686 4". I would love one if he could. Perhaps there will be a number of others who might be interested given how popular the 686 model is around here. Thanks.

Deputy,
Any chance of your friend Shelly making a run of these exact same holsters for an L frame? In my case a 686 4". I would love one if he could. Perhaps there will be a number of others who might be interested given how popular the 686 model is around here. Thanks.

That will probably depend on demand. Right now, I think it will start with the 6 1/2 N-Frame....since it's supposed to replicate the original. After that, it's certainly possible.
