My collection of S&W is as follows:
686 6 inch barrel no dash 357
Model 29-2 Nickel never fired 6 inch
Model 67 4 inch
Model 10-5 6 inch (my Dad's gun 99%)
I want to get a no lock short S&W for carry and was wondering what the recommendations were for a good one. I'd like something that would fit into a coat pocket or in warmer weather a pants pocket. Thanks in advance for a recommendation.

You can't go wrong with a 642 or 442. There were both for sale on this forum recently.

+1 on an air-weight, I carry a 637-2 daily and find the 15oz air-weight to be the best balance between stainless/blued and scandium/titanium. I have ZERO problems with felt recoil and the weight is enough to let you know you have gun but not enough to remind you have one their all day. If you want it for pocket carry then the air-weight is the way to go.

S&W 13 or 65. If not that, a 642.

I started out with a 640-1 in .357 Magnum. I still really like that gun and shoot it very well. The size is great but the weight was high for the size. And I had an itch for bigger bullets. Willing to get a little bigger if I could have lighter weight. And I wanted to stick with the Centennial style.
So I got an M296 Airweight in .44 Special. That's what I still carry today most of the time. Great gun and the new DPX ammo makes it that much better.

I recommend the Model 36, the Chiefs Special. I carry it in an IWB Bianchi leather holster. You won't know it's there. Even though it's steel and not alloy, it's still a very light gun compared to what you've got.

We Arizonans must like our model 36 snubs. I put mine in my jacket pocket, or even my back pocket. I don't even use a holster.

Model 642. Smooth, no snagging hammer, D.A.O. Stainless/silver anodized aluminum for a combination of corrosion resistance and light weight. The best concealed carry revolver I have ever seen. I have carried one a lot since 1991.

For a pocket gun, the centennials are your friend. There is no hammer to snag, a very real risk under stress, and since the backstrap is closed/sealed, there is not the risk of getting lint and other **** in the gun as there with the bodyguard types.

I vote for the model 38 and variants. Nice and light, concealable and option of SA or DA. Oh, how I long for SW to make a M338Ti.

442 no lock and a mika holster, in a pocket. Took the advice of others here, and could not be happier. The 442 took the place of a p-32 and I have not looked back.
The 442 is fun to shoot for a small light gun. Places shots real well, has a 1/8" front sight the stock boot grips work well.
Tried a model 36 I had in this set up the weight was fine but the hammer would snag on the top of my pocket. The 36 works iwb but the spur can rub you raw.
I was looking for a 642 no lock but came across the 442 and the price was correct.
Good luck with your choice.

Thanks for all the information on a pocket carry gun. I really have my eye a model 66 in the short term and a small carry S&W will come later on. I bought a cherry model 67 and I want to get it a brother for it in the 66 no dash or -1.

Years ago we carried j-frames because there was almost nothing else, now they are more popular then ever. Now with CCW permits becoming the norm I am always amazed to see the number of people who are choosing j-frames especially in a time when there are so many small semi-autos and varying materials.
99% of my off-duty carry is with an air-weight j-frame and when I have felt I may need more gun then I just carried an additional j-frame.

I had a 642 and loved it but I gave it to my father. I tried the Ruger LCP after a couple of the Kel Tecs. Needless to say I no longer have any if the semi-autos and will be getting a 442 this week. I love carrying my 1911 in the cooler temps but it is pretty hard to conceal in the summer.

Airweight J frame. No lock 442 or 642, or, if you don't mind the grip safety, the new Model 42. I am not a big fan of the scandium/titanium guns on grounds of price, and the fact that there are ammo limitations and cleaning limitations.

When you locked into "S&W pocket carry revolver" - you pretty much said "j-frame centennial" IMO.

I use the 340PD with crimson trace grips and a 10-3 RB snub for the belt. I find myself reaching for the ol' M10 more often than not.

She's a beauty. Get a sideguard holster for it. It works great for my M10 and shields the hammer.

I don't know about anyone else but I think that the trigger pull is much smoother on the 638 and 637 more so than the 642/442.

If you could find a 686-4 with 7 shots and 3 inch barrel, your quest would end. That is imho the epitome of firepower for CCW. Too heavy for pocket carry, but IWB and OWB are doable. 7 shots of 357 mag.

I'll have to weigh in with the M40. Classic series offers +P rating. Although Im sure an original would eat it all day anyways. Pocket carry I prefer internal hammer--throw some Speer Gold Dot +P hollow point .38's in there and you're good to go. Im very partial to the Model 40 though. Good luck.

If you are not a frequent shooter, want to have some basic protection in a nice middle class town, a 5 shot airweight smith rated for +p is good. Go looking, hold them, feel the feel, if it feels good to your hand, you will probably like it. There are many nice revolvers/pistols made, but not all are "good feels" to me. For protection, I like and carry something small, for most likely if ever attacked it will be up close and very personal, so I just want to hit center mass of a bad guy. For target shooting, that is a different animal and I go for larger and long barrel.
38 spl. hollow point +p will work well for most cases. I always have a couple of speed loaders with me, maybe one in pocket and more in car.

For carry in a jacket pocket, with the possibility of shooting from the pocket (ain't that going to surprise the BG?), either a Centennial or Bodyguard. I have 638 that is all around excellent, light, reasonably strong, points well. Can be shot single action, but smooth for double action.
