If the serial # is prefixed with a "J", it's 1982.

No diamonds on grips, so after 1968. Barrel pinned, so before 1982. The date range is supported by the thumb latch (it has the post-1966 form) and the Bangor Punta box (1966 or later).
I don't understand the serial number. The Standard Catalog shows that some model 38s had a J in the fourth position of the serial number in 1971-72, but that's the only year reported with that exact configuration. I thought this might be a typo in the book, but maybe not. But in that year there really should be a J in front of the six-digit (or six-character) serial you report.
All things taken into account, I'm leaning toward the 1971-72 date. But I'm not sure.

DC, Thanks. I think you nailed it. The Ser# is as I gave it with the J in the 4th position. I have the original paper work for it as well and looking closely the manual has a 1971 copyright on it.

The SCSW says J1 thru 999J99 were made in the 1971-1972 time frame so, yours is probably 1972.
I recently bought 2 of them, one LNIB probably from from 1967 with ser. no. 512xxx and another with the ser. no. 102Jxx that should be late 1971 and it is also like-new except it came with no box.
I sometimes carry the one that came w/o the box and have put away the LNIB model. Great carry guns. Yours is gorgeous. Enjoy it!
