Being pretty new to the Smith bug Im in the market for a Model 66 in 4in barrel or possibly a 686 in 4in. Definitly do not want the 2 piece barrels or new model stuff. My 1st experience with the new Smith stuff was http://smith-wessonforum.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/5301039...301096623#7301096623. So Im still pretty butt hurt while S/W "fixes" what should not have broke.
My question is: of all the dashed for 66 and 686 is there a better or are they all mods that made them better? oh...did I mention WTB 66 4inch or will consider 686 in 4inch. 686 = pre-lock

I'm not sure that any are "better" than others but I personally prefer the -4's or -5's in either model because they have the latest features without the latest bugs. -6's are ok if you can live with the internal lock which is easily disabled if you have qualms about it. My main complaint of the -6's is that by building up the rear of the frame to hide the lock mechanism they altered the classic lines of the guns(N frames remain unchanged in this regard). The biggie, as you know so well, is stay with the one piece barrel. S&W will fix yours and they WILL get these problems worked out AND as has been pointed out before all guns can and will eventually fail if acutally shot BUT the less there is to go wrong the less will go wrong.
