While at a show this past weekend I Saw a nickel model 18-1. I know Nickel? It looked right, a 4 screw ,1959 or 60 gun. I removed the grips and the only markings was a small N with a line of numbers next to it. It didn`t look like a date. Anyway I tried to buy it for 650. The seller said he didnt know what he wanted for it so I said I would check back. 12 minutes later he said he had sold it for 600. Within 20 minutes the new owner sold it for 700. I`m just wondering what a true market value would be assuming it was original. Any thoughts? I know where its at & may want to make an offer.

Interesting! I too have a 3 screw nickel mdl. 18-2. Mine started life as a blue gun belonging to a friend many years ago. He sent it back to Smith and had it nickeled.
On a long ago rabbit hunt I offered to swap him my. 45 commander for it. He agreed so we unbuckled and swapped guns and holsters in the woods. It came with smooth rosewood S&W target grips. I later added a smooth target trigger and hammer and RR/WO sights.
So the one you found is probably not original but was sent back like mine and refinished.

Well, bd, you sure didn't try very hard to get mine a couple of years ago.
BTW, did you see the pre-35 Gary Parker had for sale at the Fort Worth show? All he wants for it is your first-born child.

Thanks for the replies. The hammer & trigger, and extractor are not nickeled. the grips were not numbered though. This gun just looked right & I think I should have tried a little harder to obtain it. I guess you cant get them all.

When Smith nickeled mine they stamped a R-N in a circle on the grip frame. They also left the extractor blue.

The Combat Masterpiece line of revolvers was only cataloged as being available in S&W blue. However, it could be special ordered with a bright blue or nickel finish for an extra $6.46, or $77.53 (price effective April 1, 1954).
The small N on the grip frame, followed by the assembly number suggests the nickel finish was original.
