Default S&W model 36-2 information and history?

I found a model 36-2 that someone is asking $500 for and I wanted to know if this is worth the money and if anyone knows the history behind it. The guy selling the gun is a former police officer and told me that he got a deal through another officer, who had a connection to the NYPD. He stated that the gun was specially made for their undercover officers. The gun has a dark matte black finish, rubber concealment grips, a red insert front sight, and a bobbed hammer. The action is also extremely smooth and light and he stated that it came that way. The finish is in very good condition, as is the rest of the gun. Is this gun worth the money and does anyone know it there is any truth to the history on this gun?

The 36-2 was made about 1988. Someone has done some
custom work on it.I don't know if it is factory or not. They didn't
come with a Matt finish and bobbed hammer unless it was a special
order. From 1967to1973 NYPD received 1500 square butt with 3"
barrels. they went to the BUREAU of POLICE WOMEN NYPD. Maybe
someone will be along to correct me and finish. Don
