Hi everybody. I love this forum. After a long time of not collecting, I'm back in the groove again. I have three questions regarding dates of manufacture and then one final question regarding a Model 19. Here are the questions. ANY help you all can provide would be most appreciate.....
When were these particular Smith & Wessons manufactured:
(1) Model 36, serial number J16811. (I think it was around 1968)
(2) Model 19-3, serial number 3K51378 (I think it was around 1972)
(3) Model 39-2, serial number A432154 (I think it was the mid-1970's)
How close am I with the dates?
Also, one final question. I never heard of a forcing cone on a Model 19 cracking from the use of 125 grain jacketed bullets until I started reading this forum a few months back. I have a Model 19-3 with a 2-1/2" barrel in 99% condition. How many of you consider these rumors valid and how many of you consider them the result of not cleaning the weapon properly and letting the lead build up resulting in the damage described? Would you recommend only 158 grain projectiles? How about 158 grain lead semi-wadcutters by Winchester? I still have some of those around although I do not think they are being made any longer.
