Default Is my Model 10 an NYPD revolver?

Recently I saw a pinned barrel Model 10-5(?) HB 4" revolver at my local shop. The sales guy tells me this came from a retired NYPD officer. The finish on the gun is worn off around the barrel, the cylinder (like they should be from JayPee holsters) and there is slight freckling on the frame. However the lockup is tight, there is virtually no endshake, the timing is correct, and the cylinder to barrel gap looks right. The trigger action is smooth. Is there any way to tell if it's an actual NYPD revolvers? At $125 I bought it (sn#D680xx) as a project gun. If it is an NYPD revolver I may just send the gun to Smith for a Master Revolver Package and leave the finish as is to honor its service and honest wear marks. Thanks for any info.

I can't tell you if it is a NYPD gun, but for a $125 you got a deal! I like your idea to send it to smith and leave the finish as is!

Forum member R.M.Vivas can tell you for sure if it is an NYPD revolver. He has a list of known NYPD revolvers, as well as copies of the ledgers showing the date and to what officer the gun was issued/purchased.

He has a gun shop in NYC, and a web site. Google "R.M. Vivas" and you'll find him...

Hey, You need to check the dash number again the 10-5 is a pencil barrel. The 10-6 was a HB.

Default Nypd

NYPD revolvers started in 1987 with the model 64, my academy class was the second class to get them, 7-11-88. Model 64 spurless hammer, NY-1 inside.

10-5 wow that a little old maybe early 80's or 70's I have seen tons of 10-7 or 10-8 and they are mid 80's

the holster marks hints it was in a NYPD holster, it could be from what you described, good luck with it,

I picked up a few model 10's that were hardly ever used from buddies for supper cheep( it's nice to have friends)
one is currently at S&W for a combat revolver package and new uncle mike grips,

enjoy the model 10

NYPD had M10's long before 1987.

Some further details. It is a pinned heavy barrel model. The magna grips are worn down to the point they are rounded possibly due to rubbing up against the seatbelt or passenger side door (Plymouth Fury maybe). It has a Pachmayr Gunworks metal grip extension attached to the front of the grip. Where these grip extensions authorized? Also, if I recall Jaypee holsters retained the guns via a cylinder retention system. The cylinder of the revolver has a lot of wear on the sides rather from the front edges. It's a very tight gun, no endshake, exact timing, and precise lock up. Could this be due to only being shot for qualification and holstered the rest of the time? I don't have the dash number because it's still in the shop until I get a purchase order.

Does it have a badge number on the back of the grip frame?

If there's no powdered sugar or jelly residue it is not an authentic NYPD revolver.

Talking

Also, see if some of the dings in the barrel might look like teeth marks...another indicator of an old school Police gun...

NYPD armorers marked the revolvers w/ the officer's shield number low on the backstrap at least on several pre-model 10s & Colt Official Police models that I've owned. The officers did have to buy their own guns through approved dealers or the equipment bureau.

Not to hijack the thread.....

LOBO, did you buy that pre-model 10 from me?? That number sounds very familiar.....

My M10-5 has a pinned three inch heavy barrel. And it came here by way of Oz.
