Talking My S&W 22 range report

Yesterday I took 3 of my 22 pistols to the range amd was pleasantly surprised by two of them.

(1) Last momnth I bought a S&W Model 41 and on it's first trip to the range the gun was a disappointment. It didn't shoot very tight groups and had a couple of FTF issues. I was shooting 30 year old Winchester ammo but never considered that as part of the problem. When I got home from that range trip I did a really detailed cleaning and on reassembly lubed the gun well with slide guide.

Well yesterday the gun shot lights out and the accuracy was what I expected when I bought the gun. I was shooting CCI standard velocity ammo and Remington bulk pack gold HP ammo. The CCI shot tighter groups then the Remington but both were really accurate. The gun was shooting 10 shot groups with the CCI that you could cover with a quarter at 7 yards.

(2) I bought a S&W Model 17-4 with 8 3/8 barrel that I believe was never fired before yesterday so we broke it in. The thing is a laser beam and it is scary accurate with Remington Gold HP bulk pack ammo. We were shooting shotgun hulls off of a metal plate at 15 yards with it. The guy shooting with me asked to buy the gun on the spot and I said "sorry no can do".

(3) My S&W K22 with 6 inch barrel performed as it always does which is flawless and shot nice groups but not as tight as the Model 17 with the 8 3/8 inch barrel. The gun eats anything and is fairly accurate with all ammo but for some reason really likes Remington Gold HP ammo which is great because it's reasonable priced and easy to locate.

Anyway it was a great range day and I am super pleased that the Model 41 turned out to live up to all the hype about these guns because I was really disappointed after it's first trip to the range. I now understand what a great gun they really are.

My wife has a 41 and she consistently outshoots me when I go head to head with her firing my 4" 617 . At ten yards she considers herself a failure when she doesn't put 6 in the X ring. On more than one occasion I've seen her put 4 in one hole at that distance and cloverleaf the rest.

However, I can't shoot her 41 worth a damn. I'm a far worse shot with her 41 than I am with my 617. It's not a trigger control issue, I regularly shoot a 1911 with pretty good accuracy and I've done well with other SA semiautos. My guess is that my ageing eyes just don't visualize the front sight too well on her gun.
