Default Mod. 36 Stocks Need Refinishing W/Pics of 36 & 15

Any suggestions on how or if I should even have a circa 1969 - 71 Mod. 36's stocks refinished?

It was my Father's BU and he carried the heck out of it. One of the stocks has a small chip along the top edge next to the backstrap(Probably did that taking them off) Both of them have hardly any finish except on the inside. Other than that the checkering and the rest of the detail is a little better than fair.

The stocks are Magna(No Diamond) walnut w/brass S&W inserts. The back of the inserts are blued circles.

Almost forgot they are S/N matched to the gun.

I'm on the fence.

Thanks.......

Note: I'm not on my regular computer so no pics at this time. Probably tomorrow....

Here's the Gun....... Yes that is pitting around the frame where the grip was. This gun was carried on and off duty A LOT!

Check out the trigger spur. My Father "bobbed it" some what.

I'm a sentimentalist. I'd leave 'em just the way they are.

I say keep it in the family and refinish them your self. You
say they are not in bad condition, so just strip them sand lightly and spray the finish on. You can pick up the supplies at a local hardware store. I did this to some grips 2 weeks ago and had fun doing it, plus I could say I did it myself. Don

Here is a picture of one of my stocks just so you know what I'm dealing with.

Thanks for the all the replies....... Each of them valid of consideration.

I've done a lot of carpentry and furniture refinishing using various stains and finishes and I'm so tempted to redo them myself.

I will research this further i.e. (Types of Stains and finishes used by S&W) then get to work.

I'll post before and after Pic's

I had some stocks which had no sentimental value and they looked pretty rough. I stripped the remaining finish added some stain and then gave them a linseed oil finish. They still show their age from dents and worn checkering but the finish is much better. Good luck with your project.

I collect African art. Most of it is wood. The unpainted pieces get a coat of lemon oil. Over the years, cracks develop and blemishes become a part of the beauty of the piece.

I'd consider buying a pair of "working" grips and put the originals back on when you're showing off the little beauty!

Patina is a good thing.

Default Pictures of the Mod. 36

Here is a picture of the one of the stocks and the gun.

Yes that is pitting around the frame where the stock usually is.

Also, check out the trigger spur. It's been "bobbed" somewhat by my Father. This will be a family gun so none of this bothers me. To me the imperfectioins show the guns history and S&W ruggedness.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder (I hate cliches but in this case it true for me)

FYI. The gun is circa 1971-1972

Read you around....

It's really not that hard to refinish a set, and it's a lot of fun. These were in pretty bad shape so I used some walnut or redwood stain to get the color I wanted and let them dry thoroughly. Then I gave them 3 very light coats of satin polyurethane spray.....VERY LIGHTLY, and let them dry thoroughly. They came out pretty nice.

texagun,
They are great looking stocks and the N frame is clean as all.....

What model and vintage is it? Are the stocks matching?

Thanks for sharing...

The shrouded extractor rod is why I thought your 19 was a N frame. Is it a model 19-4 or 19-5?

I'm partial to K frames since I also have a 15-3 K38 vintage 1971. Both the 15-3 and 36 were my Father's guns and were passed downed to me.

I got them and a number of other handguns and rifles about a year ago but things have been so crazy I didn't have a chance to really sit down and go over what was what.

Well, after taking a detailed look at the S&W's I came to really appreciate them. Their quality and design are exceptional.

I have always been a Semi-Auto owner and never gave the HE a chance. That's all changed now and I'm saving up for at least another J or K frame Pre 1985.

What else do you have?

Here's a Pic of the 15-3. Some honest wear on Barrel, Ejector Rod and Cylinder other than that the gun is clean.

FYI. They are original finish stocks with matching S/N. My Father took them off the day he got the gun and put on a set of Pachmayr's.
