Default Help with troubleshooting 18-4

Howdy,

I am having a problem with my 18-4 and hoping someone can help me out w/ more knowledge on Smith's than my father and I.

Heres the jist...

My 18-4 was perfect besides a few "buggered" screws, so my father called Brownells and got a few ordered out to make it primo. Anyways, now after he swapped some screws, my cylinder falls out! Yeah... I cleaned it and it just freaking fell out... Looks like it has the crane attached, etc...

It seems that there is a screw on the grip frame that would be about 1/2 across the part on the crane piece to keep it in place but I no longer have the original screw that my father replaced, only the bad one. It appears that the old screw must have been a tad longer to keep cylinder down.

Hoping someone knew the screw I needed to order and not waste a lot of time and money on un-needed screws. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks for listening, next time my "gunsmith" father wants something to do... I'll tell him to play with his own guns.

I think that's a smart move on your part. As they old saying goes, if it ain't broke don't fix it. Call S&W, they should have blued crane screws thanks to the new classic series model 18 that is being offered.

Sure thing, tell them the model number and put the correct ones back it. Remember, the yoke screw is fitted, which means you file the end of the screw down so the yoke will open and not bind. All the screws go in snug, yoke screw too, but don't over tight the screws, or you can strip the frame.

It's possible that you father got the right screws, but installed them in the wrong place. Check the lengths.

Thanks for the heads up on the yoke screw being fitted, we forgot and the crane was tight on another Smith and he filed it down today and its smooth as glass now. Thanks again!

Also, going to call S&W in the morning and get the new yoke screw on order, seems the ones he ordered were shorter and for a different model.

Thanks for all the input guys.
