N-Frame 357 vs .44 magnum?
I am looking to get an N frame, and i have a trade setup with a guy to trade a GP100 for a Highway patrolman (If it goes through) I also have another 1911 that a member here offered a 4 inch .44 magnum for. How are velocities out of the 4 inch guns in a .44 magnum?

It really depends on the ammunition. 44 Special loads have less recoil than 44 Magnum; same with 38 Special vs 357 Magnum.
Also if you reload your own target ammunition you can create a target load with some mild re ecoil with medium power speed.
You can have anything from a OMG 300gr bone crusher (that I use while in the mountains) to a 240gr target load at about 950fps with Unique powder.
If you are stuck buying pre-made ammunition try to find some "cowboy loads" in 44. That would be a nice target load.
It really depends on what you want.

Hi, I have not shot a-lot of 44 mag/spl. But I have shot a-lot of 38/357 mag. I can tell you this. The 357 magnum in an L frame and K frame is not bad. The 357 mag in an N frame feels more like a 38 spl to me atleast. I think you will love the highway patrolman.

I'd go with the Highway Patrolman as they are excellent guns and the 357 Magnum is a great round. I have many Model 29-2's and two Model 629 no dash and I usually shoot 44 special from them because I've reached a point (older I guess) where I don't enjoy shooting full house 44 Mag ammo that much. I don't have a 4 inch 44 mag but the felt recoil would be even higher with that verses a 6 inch model. The N frame 357's like the Model 28 Highway Patrolman are really well balanced revolvers and they handle the 357 Magnum round really well.

I have both a Model 29 and a Model 27 (nicer version of the 28 Highway Patrolman) and I have had a Highway Patrolman in the past. Shooting 170 grain bullets at 1,150 fps out of my 27 is like shooting a .38 Special +P out of a smaller gun. But, my Model 29, shooting my handloads of 10.0 grains of Unique with a 250 grain cast bullet is running at 1,065 fps out of a 4-inch barrel. Great load, mild recoil. I shoot forty of those at a time. So really both have their pros and cons.

In the various magnum revolver calibers, I seem to lose about 150 FPS between similar 4-inch and 6.5-inch guns. Each gun is different, but this number has always been fairly close.
A 4-inch 44 Magnum is not a lot of fun to shoot unless you are a handloader and can make what you want. If you will be hunting with the gun, it might be best to look around for a 6-inch gun.

That sounds like a good trade, especially if the S&W is in great shape. The N-frame guns (regardless of caliber) are just fine guns, period. I've never much cared for the Ruger Redhawk in .44 mag and have always greatly preferred the 29/629 (old style). I've got one of the first 629s and it's never been shot. Stamped side plate, pinned barrel, flash chromed hammer and trigger, and counterbored chambers. It also has a slick action and smooth wood grips, which S&W provided me with after I complained about their checkered grips (why would they even sell the gun with those things?).
