Lucky enough
I held off on buying a M10 as I was looking for a pretty specific manufacture/shipping date.
I carried a Model 10, as a Helicopter Crewmember, for a side-arm. So I wanted one shipped prior to 1969.
This is the one I finally found - a Model 10-5 w/ C series number, matching numbered grips, & shipped sometime in 1966 or 1967. The date was perfect for what I required.

CH47,
Nice revolver. Now you need to get one of these holsters from El Paso Saddlery and it will be like old times.
I have been considering one for my 10-7. Whereas yours could be embossed US, mine would be USMC.

Someday I too will have one of these. Especially a 3" HB RB. What would also be cool is a .22lr version of the 4" pencil barrel. Wasn't there one mad a while back? I believe it was a model 45 for the Post office.

sw44spl,
Glad that the girlfriend is ok and they didn't get the model 10. Too bad whoever broke in didn't get some lead from the model 10.

WyoStillhunter -
Nice holster, nice leather - I've been eyeing one of those for a while.
Be great for fly-fishing. Wonder if it would interchange w/ a 4" Model 19 also?

This is my Model 10-5. Looks a bit worn, but I still love it, and very grateful to have it. I think it is mid/late 1960's vintage, but not sure.
Thanks

The Model 10 is nothing less than ubiquitous. It is THE revolver, subtle and perfect in its simplicity.
It's soldiered through a CENTURY despite competition from 1911's which "rendered it obsolete."
We're at the 110th anniversary of this sweet thing, and for a "plain" gun, there are a smorgasbord of variations, from thumbnail front sights at the end of six inches of pencil-thin barrel to 2 inch snubs, and all sorts in between.
Unabashed fan here.

I don't know if they were from Jer's Gun Shop, but I spotted a dealer at the local (Austin, TX) gun show with about a half a dozen pencil barreled Model 10's this weekend for sale at $289.00. I also spotted a used Model 10 with a 3.0 inch barrel that was a bit rich for my blood at $520.00 - especially considering it had some loss of bluing (approx. 85% intact). I'm still waiting for my call from Jer's, and his deal is looking better and better.
Regards,
Dave

If it's like mine, you won't regret for one minute waiting on it. Awesome deal on an awesome, underappreciated in my opinion, gun.

If Jer has any more "broken" guns grab them quick. The Model 10-7 I got from him that was tagged "will not cycle" was only missing some parts and gummed up with WD-40. Otherwise it was hardly used. With some spare parts and cleaning I now have an excellent shooter that only cost me about $110 total.

I have 2 10-7's, a 4 incher and a snub nose, both nickels. This last weekend, saw a 10-5 blue; but, had a tag of $500. It would be a good companion gun, but man.......!

I bought a 5 inch pencil years back cheap from my bullet caster who dealt... I bought it for a "project gun to rebarrel etc. It sat in the safe for a while until we had an NRA basic pistol/introduction course. I shot it a bit right before that class and found out what the real deal was... it has been a favorite of many a new shooter since.
I also have a 4 inch pencil and a 4inch HB 13 now. All acquired too cheap to pass up ...
They were my first exposures to fixed sights and have cured me of sight snobbery....
Great guns they are!

Hello folks.
I just purchased my first model 10, a 92% 10-5 4". Bluing is excellent, no holster wear, I rated it pretty modestly since there is a small scratch on the barrel and some handling marks here and there.
I've been reading about low priced M10s since I've been here, and especially on THR. People picking up M10s for $200 or so, being in CA it was close to impossible to find a M10 that cheap, even beat up or police trade in.
However, luck was on my side, I found this clean example on a CA gun forum, no one wanted it, it dropped from $350 -> $250.
Well, it's DROSed, ready for pickup on the 29th. I'll have a picture once I get it, but I was quite impressed how nimble and fast that revolver felt. For $250, even though I didn't need another .38 I'm happy with it, especially being a Californian.

Love my 10 no dash
I think it might be getting lonely so I am looking for a 4" playmate with the same front sight.

The model 10 I got from Jer's was my first model 10. Since then I have found 3 more for under $175. I have all 3 of them now. One of them is a 5" nickle that was in about 98% condition. I will try to post some pics when I get home from Wisconsin. I have to get these troops back from Iraq and back to Kansas first.

This was a veteran NYPD 10-3, kind of wished I kept it, was very accurate with a great trigger.

Well, I finally got off my lazy butt and picked up the Model 10.
It locks up and times nicely, great balance for a K-frame. It feels so light and nimble compared to my Model 19s, what a huge difference. Similiar in pointability to my M65 3" HB.
I think I'm going to like it, especially for only $250.

I just had a couple of Model 10s out today for an ammo burnin' session; my favorite ol' 4-inch HB along with a 4-inch tapered barrel. Wow! Been shooting these things since the mid-1970s and they are still amazing.

I likes 'em blue and I likes 'em nickle; I prolly wouldn't care if they was colored like a pickle
I likes 'em big and I likes 'em small; I likes 'em round butt; I just likes 'em all:

Dug mine out of the safe to get a pic. (sorry im no photographer )
10-5 #D1207XX. AFAIK my great uncle purchased it new in 69-70 and when he passed it was given to my father who gave it me about 15 years ago. Great shooter and was my first handgun. I used to carry it deer hunting and she has a few coyotes under her belt.

Hello
Just wondering here...has anybody here ever heard anyone anything really bad about the S&W M&P/Model 10 Revolver?
The vast majority of people I know usually have spoken good things about this revolver.
Thanks

The factory grip is terrible without a adaptor on the older models. And maybe the power to weight ratio is a bit bad since you can get a .357 in the same size and weight.
But other than that i can't think of any other bad points.

I had the number, but lost it. The 10 he sold me was post 1982, 4"
heavy barrel and square butt. Looking for a two inch barrel and extractor rod and pin for it now; decided to make a project from it.

i think j and g guns has the parts you are looking for. i thought about getting it myself but wasn't sure it would work fo my 10 -10. anyway it is about $99.00. says it has everything but the frame and it's been there a good while on the site.

I have a 10-8 4" HB..The standard workhorse of S&W..Love it. Its beat up, has lots of blueing wear but shoots great. It just seems to fit the hand well. I originally bought it becasue it was cheap and I wanted a gun to try my hand at a trigger job. Cant bring myself to monkey around with it yet. Pretty cool just the way it is.

Received a model 10 and just joined the forum
Hello from Blue Ridge VA, I just joined the S&W Forum today because I just received a Model 10. I do not know much about this gun and am eager to learn from you all.
I have been carying a S&W Hammerless Airweight 38 for years and was excited when my friend gave me his Model 10 revolver. I like the 38 cal. and the 10 is a nice addition to my gun collection. The Serial number of my gun starts with a C and is C507XXX. The condition is great, the gun shows wear from being carried in a holsteer but the blueing still had great luster, the grips are stock wooden and the gun has the 4" heavy barrel. I have not fired it yet but can tell by the feel of the gun it must be a pleasure to shoot.
Any information you all can provide about this gun would be appreciated and also can this gun fire the 38 +P rounds or can you recommend the favorite ammo for this gun?

Yes, absolutely you can use +P. Any S&W made after the switch to model numbers would be more than sturdy enough to handle the slight extra pressure.
I don't have the S&W handbook, but that serial # is most likely from the early to mid 60's. I'm sure others here will be able to give you a better date

There are certainly more powerful and "less plain" S&W's around, but the Model 10 has met my perceived requirements for about 40 years now. I suspect that they'll continue to do so...
Best.

What kind of finish is that on the 4" square butt?

I think that the finish on the 4 inch is a bead blast blue and the 2 inch M10 is or might be some kind of a parkarized type bluing what the pic shows. rz625-8

Chronologically, here are my M&P/Model 10s:
This first one belonged to my grandfather. It's a Model 1902 hand ejector, 5" barrel. It received very hard use.
This next is a M&P Model of 1905, 4th change. 5" barrel, manufactured in 1934.
Here's a Victory Model, manufactured in 1943 and refurbished for use in the Vietnam war:
This is a Model 10-2 4", manufactured in 1963 and still as new in the box:
And finally, a Model 10-5 snubby round butt, also as new in the box, made in 1977:
So, I have a bit of history here, going back to my grandfather's era at the turn of the 20th Century. These are great guns.

Model 10?
A question for a few of you "old timers" like myself: Was the Model 10 the same one featured at the beginning of the "Superman" TV series, when the narrator remarked "Faster than a speeding bullet ..."?

Newbie with model 10's
Hello All,
I am a complete newbie to this forum as well as collecting S&W handguns. I literally stumbled into my first one in a trade with my son...it's a 1963 model 10-5 with a thin 4" barrel. As I began to shoot this gun I couldn't help but notice how natural and easy it is to point and shoot accurately and comfortably. I was able to point, shoot and hit the target with an ease that I have never experienced with any other handgun. The most wonderful aspect of all is the trigger. It is crisp, predictable, comfortable and simply breaks like a thin glass rod. I am still utterly amazed at this trigger every time I fire this handgun! I thought perhaps it was a fluke, one of those one out of a thousand guns that has an incredible trigger...until I shot a few other Smiths. I thought "Good Greif, they ALL have triggers like this!" I just found another one at a local gun show this weekend. It's a 1966-67 era model 10-6 heavy barrel that is unfired mint in the original box with all paperwork, cleaning tools and a Smith made leather holster that has never had a gun in it. Now I have a real dilemma...I want to take this gun out and shoot it. How much value will I destroy by doing this? I traded an excellent condition SIG P-6 with two mags and box for this Smith. I had about $350.00 in the SIG. I'm happy with the trade...I can get another P-6 anytime...in fact, I have another one. I just couldn't resist this trade. I can see a Smith addiction starting here. Frankly, I'm a little afraid...my addiction to pre-64 Winchester rimfires is already out of control. Somebody please help me!

Any one else love the model 10?
The S&W model 10 was my first center-fire handgun. My best friend's father gave it to me when I was 16,41 years ago.I'm still shooting it regularly & still hit as well with it as I do with any of my revolvers. It's a model 10-5 & that's a Heiser holster with it.
Next is a pre-war 6" M&P with an Abercrombie & Fitch marked holster made by Colorado Saddlery.
Following that is an early post-war 2" M&P with a Berns-Martin Lightnin' holster.
Last but not least is a 4" M&P in a Myres Threepersons holster.
Enjoy.

Finally, I was able to pick up a fixed sight K frame. This Model 10-5 came home with me a week or two ago.
