Default Any one else love the model 10?

I didn't have a model 10 untill I bought one of the police trade in from Jer's Gun Shop. I took it out again today to put some more rounds thru. I only got to shoot 50 rounds but this thing is becoming my favorite gun very quickly. I used it to shoot a skunk in the back yard a couple of nights ago and it made quick work of the critter. I am finding myself grabbing it and carrying it more and more often. I am going to buy another one or two if he gets more in. Am I crazy or does anyone else like these guns this much?

Ratty looking circa 1965 10-6 4".

Ran the 25' falling plate rack 3 times in a row!!!

Gotta get some paper out & see what happens.

The model 10 is one of my favorites. The only problem I have now is wanting a 4" skinny barrel, and a square frame snubnose to go with my 4" HB.

I love my dad's old Victory Model in .38 Spl. It's the pencil barrel model, and I've put on Pachmayr Grippers. I Didn't like the wood slabs or the Lanyard loop. I'd like to find the different barrel length and grip frame options in the 10/13 and 64/65. (2",3",& 4" barrels, & square and round butt grip frames) That would be an interesting mini-collection itself.

Hello. Yes, count me in as a fan and user of the Model 10. I owned and shot them for years now. Wish that I had not foolishly let some of them get away...

There are certainly more powerful and "less plain" S&W's around, but the Model 10 has met my perceived requirements for about 40 years now. I suspect that they'll continue to do so...

Best.

I have my Dad's model 10-5 with 6 inch barrel and I like it. That said my interests in S&W revolvers has a different direction as I like Model 29's, model 27's and model 17's.

The Model 10 is a great gun and they can be had for really good prices. They have a large following and I think that's great.

Preferences vary as to barrel weight and length, and hand size will dictate RB vs. SB and choice of grips. They're all available, usually inexpensively. If the one you have shoots to POA, it's probably the best .38 Spl ever made.

Absolutely! I currently have a Model 15-3 nickel, but I prefer the fixed sight Model 10. Wonderful guns.

Don't have a model 10 yet. What a "bummer"
I have been looking for a snub nose for a while.
I also like the heavy barrel model 10's as I think
they look better. Don

I have a 4" heavy barrel 10-8. I haven't got to shoot it yet but I'm planning on doing so this weekend. The picture in my avatar is not my gun, I can't find my USB cable to upload a pic of mine

I really liked the HB model 10's and used to shoot one of our agencies when I was teaching that way I didn't have to clean my model 19 .
They are extremely accurate and the trigger really smooths out with use. I regret not picking one up when our agency switched over to autos.

M10s RULE! They are so many of them around you can get them pretty cheap and they are simply one of the best most classic handguns ever made. Enjoy it! Here's my 2 inch with pearl grips:

The Model 10 is my favorite and most used center fire handgun.

How many out there in Forumland have noticed that Model 10s are reliably dead-on at practical handgun ranges with the 158 grain loadings, both standard velocity and +P. On a classic "traditional" Smith & Wesson revolver, fixed sights are delightfully useful.

Love the 10. Mine has the pencil barrel, with the half moon sight. Shoots better than me, for sure. I love it's looks.

When I see new .38 special wheel guns today selling for $4-500, I just shake my head. They have no soul like a S&W.

I love the model 10. Simple, elegant and a naturally pointing, great shooter. I like the 4 inch HB best.

I've been jonesin' for a 4" HB Model 10 for awhile now. I just won an auction for one on GB last night. My previous bid on the same gun fell short of the reserve about a week ago. It was relisted with a lower reserve and I snapped it up for the opening bid amount. Now the wait begins...

Three successive M10's kept me company on many long, dark nights when I was working uniform patrol in the late 70's to early 80's. It seemed like enough gun back then...blue steel, six shot, .38 Special...simple, reliable and effective. The old M&P will always have a special place in my heart. I have a couple today. I seem to amaze some of the younger fellows at the range when I run one of my M10's in combat mode. They seem surprised that the old fart with the antique revolver can put bullets into the vitals of a target and reload and put some more into it very quickly.

I also have a 4" heavy barrel 10-8. It may be the most accurate revolver I have; it's also easy to shoot well. I don't shoot it as often as I should. Been trying to find a good deal on a 2 incher. Twaits: nice looking piece!

I took MY Jer's $140 M-10s out for another whirl today......

A buddy who bought one of the 4 m-10s I got from Jer's fell in love with it immediately.

He's an old Cowboy from eastern Oregon who is an extremely skilled rifleman (never owned a scope until I bought him one for his .22- shot all of his elk, deer, coyotes, etc with iron sights) but had never EVER owned or even shot a handgun before. I swapped the grips on his gun for the oversize packys that came on my m-15 because they fit his large hands perfectly.

Our first targets were simply sheets of computer paper stapled to a propped-up round of firewood. Distance was 50 feet, shot single action.

It took him 6 shots to feel comfortable with the m-10, and from then on he had no trouble grouping his shots near the center of the paper.

Our next targets were the sheet of computer paper with a square of "post-it" paper stapled in the center. I did this to help show where any errant shots were hitting so he could correct. I had him shoot 3 full cylinders. He ended up putting 10 of the 18 shots into the post-it.

The more he shot, the better he got. This, I believe, was a testament to the m-10's overall package. It just plain works.

We did a bunch of single action first shots with a double action second shot. No problemo.

It took a few rounds to get smooth in double action only shots, but he's progressing quickly.

Then we started shooting single handed........not a problem.

Next came single handed with our weak hands.....I was surprised to find that I could transition so easily and hit so well. My carry piece (an ambidextrous, compact, 1911 style auto) is not nearly as easy to shoot weak-handed. Perhaps I should start looking for a nice snubbie??

The icing on the cake was a childhood fantasy:

My wife and I both have m-10s that we bought a week before the big Jer's blowout sale.

Both were Oregon Department of corrections turn-ins with identical "Uncle Mikes" (look just like packys only slightly smaller) grips.

Holding one in each hand, I proceeded to alternately fire each at the target. When the smoke cleared, 11 holes had manifested themselves onto the computer paper. Could the S&W Gods be commanding me to take up cowboy action shooting?

Nah....

I have shot many pistols and revolvers. The m-10 (and it's dirty little sister the m-15) just might be the best production package to ever leave the S&W factory. How can you beat it for $140??

Oh, and I called Jer's and left a message asking them to put my name on four more m-10s when the next batch come in. SHHhhhhhhhh.......Don't tell my wife.

I love model 10s and pre 10s. I have a model 10 heavy barrel in 4 inch. I had a pre 10 6 inch that I traded for a model 66. I also have the sister to the model 10. I have a pre-15 combat masterpiece vintage 1951. Most of my revolvers were made between 1950 to 1968. I believe that was Smith and Wessons best years.

I bought two of the five screw pre model 10's that Jer's had for sale. The first one looks to be in about 87-90% and shoots great. The second is in about 70% with a few rust spots and lots of blue missing. Both of them are in the C 312*** and C 313*** serial number range. All numbers match up except on the grips as these did not have grips when shipped to me. Both where carried a lot and shot very little. Both show signs of being polished and reblued. But for the price you could NOT go wrong. The second is by far the best shooting, most accurate fixed sight handgun I own. If they get any more in I'll be in line for a couple more. You just can't go wrong with a model 10, even if it's a beater.

Anybody have there copy of the SCSW handy? Can you look up the approximate dates of manufacture for me? (Ser #C 312*** and C 313***). I'm out of town and don't have my reference materials with me, just the two model 10's and a 19-3.

Thanks,

Class III

Yeah, I like 'em too. 10-5 5 incher and an LAPD-modified 10-8 DAO 3". Both are shot weekly and are my favorites, out of over 50 S&Ws. Bottom revolver is a NIB 10-7 5". I agonize daily over whether to shoot it.

Default Model 10

I owned a 4" model 10 with heavy barrel in the seventies. Sold it ten years later. Wish I had kept it. It was a fine shooter.

Default M&P/M10's - what's not to like

The beauty of the M&P/M10 is that it is simply a functional, no frills revolver that works. The factory invented a winner with the Military & Police, and the production volume over the years proves that the format worked - as several million were made.
From an enthusiast standpoint, there's something in the M&P/M10 line for virtually anyone, short barrels, long barrels, finish, SB/RB, and for a collector there are enough unique models made for special order that you can spend years searching for the one off versions and nuggets show up with some diligence.
The other aspect is that the volume made impacts the price range, these guns are still bargains compared to other models. And - since it's predominately made in the 38 Special model, a cartridge that gets the job done if you do your part, the ability to shoot for little $$ - even in todays ammo scarcity environment - allows for enjoyment in shooting, as that is what these guns were made for.
Here's a few photos to show what one can do if hell-bent on going overboard on an accumulation project........

Here's the M&P/M10 family:

Nice revolvers, 'SmithNut". Love those 3 inchers, especially the square butts. Here's another 'plain jane" M&P, but a nice one:

This one, purchased from "handejector", is 98% plus, and is a great shooter with factory wadcutters:

Default anyone else love the model 10

"I find myself grabbing it and carring it more and more often often" Would that be the dead skunk or the model 10 you noted?

Smithnut, That is truly an awesome display of Model 10's! Thanks.

With the variations available to the average person, The Model 10 is Smith & Wesson's "gun for all seasons". My only model marked example (10-5, by the way) is shown below, although I have several M&P's from before the Model marking began. I think, as a design, the M&P / Model 10 is the ultimate example of what made S&W the preeminent manufacturer of handguns in the US of A.

Regards,

Jerry

I don't know when the Model 10 2-inch variation was finally dropped but this one was hard for my dealer to find when I ordered it in 1996. It has a particularly nice action as delivered. This one predates MIM parts.

I finally got to shoot mine today, very nice is all I can say. Ran about 50 rounds through it, single and double action.

I'm not sure I like the Model 10.

I bought a police turn-in Model 10 for my wife a few years ago. I thought she'd shoot it once, scream, drop it to the ground, and never want to shoot again.

She never shot a gun in her life, but she started shooting the M10 very well right off the bat.

Now she's got almost as many guns as I do, as well as her CCL. Plus, I have a tough time keeping her away from gun shops and Gunbroker.

All because of that blasted Model 10.

LOL I didn't know where that story was going when you first started out by saying you didn't know if you liked the 10s or not

I have one of the Jer's Gun Shop Model 10 police turn ins, and it too shoots terrific. It's a post-1982 non pinned four inch heavy barrel. I really want to find a good used two inch barrel and extractor rod for it and convert it to a snubby.

Just bought my first model 10 snub today.
I previously had a 6" model 10 pencil barrel but foolishly sold it.
This one is a no-dash RB and in pretty good shape for a nearly 50 year old gun.

Without the Model 10 or the M&P's of days gone by, S&W would have faded away sometime during the last century. And besides, they're just cool

a few pics
