Talking My Electra Dyna Mag 29-2 *Here you go RK*

A fellow forum member posted a link to this gun on GB with a question about the grips that were on it if they were "Cokes"
No one seemed to be bidding on it, so I said what heck I can use the grips. $688.00 later here is what I got.

With new grips 29-2 #N61195 shipped May 1972

What kind of makes it neat is the "electric" sights that are on it.

Front sight

Rear sight

You can see in the front sight pic where there is a channel cut along the top of the barrel running under the rear sight. I am kinda scared to take it apart, but there was some pretty intricate machining done. The next pic shows the hole in the right sideplate the wires come through.

My original intent was to rob the grips and such, but the gun kinda intrigues me. Like Doc says...without something to make it unique its just another gun. I am not sure this is what meant. Plus it has one of the slickest actions I have ever felt

Oh yeah...the Cokes. They need VM's magic as soon as the bank account allows

The display case...needs to go to jcelect when the grips go to VM

Finally an unopened cleaning kit

All in all about $500 worth of accessories give or take.

I sure would like to know more about these sights if anyone has any info. I may try to get them to work

That's a sweet 29, now I've never heard of electric sites. I'm going to assume the red ramp and white outline lightup?

Curtis...there used to be ads for those sights in gun magazines. I can remember seeing them, but not the details. If I run across an ad I will let you know.

It appears that the light is below the red in the front sight, and the bulb is definitely below the white outline. The outline on the rear has been modified making it a larger surface area.
I have never cared for 4" guns, but this one is growing on me.

2 things are kinda odd. #1. the target hammer has been replaced by a standard one, but it still has the .500" trigger.
#2. Actual measurement of the barrel is 3 3/4" almost exactly. I have seen barrels that were 1/8" shy of advertised (5 7/8" etc.) but this is the first one Ive seen that was 1/4" off.

If it were mine, first thing I'd do is find a battery that fits the sights mechanism and try that sucker out. Also, I wonder: do electric sights offer any real advantage over Hi Viz? That apart, the gun is beautiful. Four inchers are my passion and I particularly like the look of 4" N frames.

I have seen a couple four-inch 44 Magnum barrels that are considerably below the 4-inch mark - approaching 3-3/4". The remaining one I have loose in my parts collection has the old type ampersand. No obvious evidence it has been set-back, so I wonder about it too.

Interesting gun you have there.

I think I might try to get the sights working. I did try a battery on the wires, but didnt get any results at first. I know from pics of a gun like this the mechanism was in the grips and used what looked like a big watch battery and a button through the grip itself.
I dont think I'd give up my 6.5" guns, but as I said before this thing is growing on me. It has currently become my favorite truck gun.

I remember this too. I agree with trying to get the sights to work. There was an article written on these guns I think in Guns & Ammo. We need Muley Gil to weigh in on this. He has a great memory for developments like this that were done in the 70s.

You have a really interesting specimen that will be even more interesting when the history gets uncovered.

Curtis, a lot of bang for the buck there. Good for you.

I've also saw those sights advertised in gun magazines. It was a few years back and don't remember what magazine. I would say it had to be American Rifleman or Guns & Ammo, as those have been the only two I read.

I measured the barrel on my 4" 29-2, of similar vintage, and it's 4" in length. Maybe a paper thickness shy, but a thin piece at that.

I agree the 4" M29 grows on you. Mine has as well. It's one of the quickest pointing revolvers I have. Everytime I pull it up, it's right on target.

Regards:
Rod

Thank you. I somehow have to justify the immense amount of shelf space taken up in our library with what my wife charmingly refers to as "all that old ****".

There were several threads about this type of sight a long while back & it looks like a 2.7 volt battery was used..
You should be able to find a rechargeable battery set in 3 volt probobly at Walgreens..
Then you'll have to modify a set of grips with a button..
That was a realy neet old sight mod useing LEDs..
Thanks for shareing the pics..
Gary

For all the help and replies. Turns my buddy also has the 1979 gun digest annual and is going to make me photocopies. I am not sure yet what I am going to do for grips and there is some wiring missing as well, but with the schematic I might be able to rig something.
