Default Recall on S&W 581, 586, 686 and others

I know this is old news for some of you, but I just found out that there was a recall on these particular revolvers. I'm thinking about purchasing a 586 in pristine condition and it has not had the repair. (Does not have the M stamped on the crane.) Does anyone know at this late date if S&W will still repair these revolvers for free, or at all, for that matter? Thanks.

Smith & Wessons have a Lifetime Warranty; however, I owned a 586 that I won NRA police distinguished with that never had the "M" modification and worked just fine. A friend of mine owns it now and it still runs fine.

Nothing wrong with the gun, and Smith will pay shipping both ways on it so if you want a factory trigger job, etc the shipping will be "FREE". Works good for you .

Lacking the "M" stamp can mean a couple things. First, if it's in the recall dash/serial range, it could have been M upgraded, but missed getting the "M" stamp. S&W has some records of these. Second, if its outside of the recall dash/serial range, then it was done before it left the factory.

If you do not plan on running a bunch of magnums through it, in rapid fire, you can probably get away without the "M" upgrade.

I purchased a little used 581 last fall and sent it back to S&W. S&W paid for the FEDEx shipping, both ways. It took about two weeks from the time I dropped it off to the time I picked it up.

The modification involves changing out the firing pin and firing pin bushing.

The recall had to do with primer flow back into the firing pin hole locking up the revolver. Pretty uncommon but when LE was big into revolvers and using hotter loads it could pose a problem. Only affected no-dash and dash 1 models, dash 2 and later do not need it.
