Default Model 649 HELP!, Anyone have one with a lower SN# ?

I am trying to fill in some blanks regarding the model 649.
Specifically the first 100 made way back in 1985.

The stainless Model 649 "The .38 Bodyguard Stainless" was introduced in 1985 and discontinued (in .38 special) in 1999.

SCSW says " Variation"
1985 100 marked Model 649 / Limited edition."

I have one of these Ltd edition 100, with factory wood case serial number AHT 4201.

Im trying to find another LTD edition owner to fill in a couple of blanks.

1, Were all 100 engraved the same, or does each have a different engravement number.

2, Were these the first 100 model 649's off the assembly line or were they pulled out for engravement out of order.
Since mine is AHT4201, It would make sense #2 of 100 should be serial number 4202 etc.

3, Does anyone have a 649 with a serial number lower than AHT4201?

Nice gun. Each gun "should" be numbered differently. The gun in the picture being the first of 100. I don't know that to be fact though. The 649 no-dash I had (sold...unfortunately) was ALB6xxx.

Thanks for the reply Photoman,
Just did a quick check.
According to SCSW my serial number dates to July 1985.
Yours was November 1985.
Unless another engraved model pops up there is no way to know.

Guns, as well as other collectibles are often lettered 1 of XXXX, such as 1 of 100 in this case or 1 of 1,000 or even 1 of 10,000, and as such does not mean that particular specimen is the first one. In the case of guns, the serial number denotes the order made. Other collectibles may or may not have a distinguishing number. For example, I collect Franklin and Danbury Mint model cars. Many special editions were labeled 1 of XXX. Some also carried individual numbers while others did not. In the case of this 649, the 1 of 100 only means the gun is one of the one hundred made, not the first one of that run.

On the other hand, the serial number on the OP's gun, AHT 4201 may indicate it was the first one in the series, since it ends in 01. Roy Jinks may or may not be able answer the question definitively. I say 'may' because sometimes S&W got wonky (technical term) with their serial numbers.

Interesting the serials are so far apart AHT 4201 vs AHT 547X

Just means the guns were randomly pulled from production at different times and the serial numbers have nothing to do with X of XXX.

The AHT prefix is a just a normal serial number sequence. I've seen it used with Model 10's and Model 624 & 29's, J-frames, N-frames, all kinds of Smiths. I don't think it was anything special, per se.

BTW, one of the Model 10's was a Republic of Hong Kong Police (RHKP) variation.
