grips for S&W 629 44 mag trail boss
What would be a good alternative/replacement grip instead of a Hogue monogrip on a 3" trail boss N frame? That one is somewhat narrow, driving the metal backstrap backwards and twisting the gun somewhat on recoil. Maybe that is just the nature of the beast but I wonder if anyone else has ever replaced these grips to increase comfort.

Is this a round butt frame?
If so then stick the X frame Hogue grip on it. It has a covered backstrap and fills the hand much better. (available from S&W)
If it's a square butt frame I suggest Herrett's Jordan Trooper.
Welcome to the forum.

Thanks a lot Joni Lynn and WFR. I guess I will give the X frame grips a try. My gun looks like WFR's with the non-fluted cylinder and the lanyard--so I assume it is a round butt, too and the X frame grip should fit?
WFR--did you find that the X frames made a big difference for you?

It definitely takes the bite out of sharper-recoiling loads.
I ordered mine directly from S&W and actually have a set on each of mu shooter .44's now.
Give them a try. Pull your current grip off and make sure your gun is a RB first.

Factory RB Combats for K,L,N frame 3 inch barrels
These factory roundbutt combats ,which are discontinued, are the absolute nuts for this type revolvers,as well as K or L frames. They work well and look perfect.Prices seem to be between $125 and $200 and can not be beat. Spend the money,Buy the best....I have them on 3 inch 629s,625s,624s,696s,66s,13s,65s.and 2 1/2 inch 66-1s and 19-3s and 19-4s,and 686s.I have 3 or 4 Craig Spegles,2 Eagle SS,1 Don Collins and about 4 or 5 beautiful stags to go with maybe 12 or so Factory RB Combats. All grips are like new,and are ,of course, Spectacular to say the least...

Not an expert by any means but based on my limited experience, the Hogue x-frame grips are very good in absorbing recoil. I have them on my 500 and they work well. I might use them on something like a 329 if shooting heavy loads but the S&W (wooden) combats can't be beat for looks, use, etc. on everything else.

Wow. Those are purty! If they are functionally better than the Hogue mono grip that I have already that is mighty tempting.
By the way, how do those grips differ from the Finger Groove Combat Grips offered on the S&W web site for $65 - $80?

The hogue Monogrip lessens the felt recoil way better the those wood grips when using the full magnum loads. The X frame grip are even better. I shot a 629 with 4" with the X frame rubber grips today, like the ones posted above by WFR, that belong to a friend of mine and it makes a difference believe me. The wood ones just hurt. Just my $ .02

The new style grips are thinner and to me, don't fit the gun as well.
The grips pictured, match the vintage closer to the -4.

A bit off topic, but...
Those OEM .460/.500 Magnum Hogue X-frames from S&W Accessories ($37 + s/h) really help with the recoil of a 4"/6" 629. I have a grip for each of my two 629s, having even used them on my first 629 - a 629MG - great aid in recoil management. As they are stated as fitting the K, L, N, & X frames, I had to try:
Ad absurdium. Maybe. They make the goofy little L-frame 296 fun to pop away with those 200gr .44 Special Gold Dots. Of course, forget sticking it in a pocket. With the OEM boots - and a Mika's pocket holster - it hides in most of my pants pockets - but only in a raincoat with those Hogue X-frames. Still - for a smallish 629 - and real Magnums - I'd make some concessions!

I have Ahrends grips on my Trail Boss. I shoot the gun better with these grips than with the rubber grips it came with. They're nice looking too!
