686 porting
I recently purchased a 686-5 4" that I plan on porting and polishing the cylinder. What does everyone recommend on who to do the porting Magnaport and 2 or 4ports or is there other people. Also is it even worth it or not.

If you're set on porting, send it off to magnaport.

Some people claim to feel the difference after porting, I've had several ported ad can't really tell if it made much if any difference. Now I just don't bother, but if it's something you want, go for it.

Yeah, I'm one!!
I had a 4-port job done by MagNaPort on my 4-inch Model 66-6. The 66 has less mass than a lugged 686, especially at the muzzle. Muzzle flip was reduced by the porting. Recoil was reduced a bit but the 66's recoil never bothered me. Bottom line: easier to control with porting.
Some guys complain about flash in reduced light conditions. Lights at my range are rheostat controlled. Shooting the 4-port in reduced light hasn't bothered me at all. Oh, if you're looking for it, two, distinct, muzzle flashes (ports & muzzle) are visible but the ports seem to "split the effort", making the overall flash just a flash.
So it goes. . . .

I think this is what you're looking for; I had my 4" 586 dual Mag-na-ported. It took the sting out of the recoil with 125 gr. Remington SJHPs and turned the gun into a total bullet hose. It's not an exaggeration to say it almost shoots itself. It doesn't hurt that the gun has the best DA trigger, by far, of all of my guns.

I don't really like the magnaporting that ports at 3 & 9 o'clock behind the upper ports but I do like the idea of a double set of regular ports.

There's other companies but none have garnered the reputation that magnaport has.

SDM, SDM Fabricating Home in Ohio does porting of some sort!and there is another, Gemini Customs LLC - Custom 1911 Firearms
There's probably a bunch of others but I can't think of any.
Beware, there's lots of people that will makes lots of holes in your gun, very few can or will do a good job and give back a gun you'll be happy with.
Despite what I said about porting I have several 44 mags that are ported, all by magnaport. The most effective port I've used though is the factory power port design such as found on my 629-4..

The reason I bought the gun was to do different things to and mainly shot .38s through it. I didnt want to shoot my 66-2, Classic hunter 686, 686-0 8 3/8" or Colt Python so I got this to change up shoot and try different things with since its a -5 and not ruining one of the more desirable ones.

Good thinking, go for it. magnaport does a nice neat job and since it's done with electrical discharge machining there's no burrs or anything in the barrel afterwards.

I am very pleased with the work Mag-na-port did on my 586. I wouldn't even look elsewhere. JOMO
