A 629 "Classic"?? No lock
I saw a used 629 at the shop today. It had NO lock and was stamped on the barrel Classic. I think it was a dash-3.
I thought all the classics were blued and not stainless??
About what year were these made?
Thanks

They came out in '91, and went to '94, and yes, you could get them in both blue and S.S. They are very good guns, and generally quite accurate. They have all the endurance upgrades, and feature interchangable front sight blades. They have the blackpowder chamfer on the leading edge of the cylinder, and are round butted. They came with S&W logoed Hogue rubber square to round conversion stocks.
It gets confusing sometimes, since they are calling the new repro guns, classics.
I has a blued 5" gun, and sold it because the cases on all my loads would stick in the chambers once fired. I didn't know back then that they were using undersized throats to try to achieve accuracy. I didn't learn about this until years later. Brian Pearce's article in Handloader that covers the model 29 mentions this some.

Thanks, I looked at the SW website and it seems they still offer them but with the lock.
The one at the shop had a real nice trigger and I wondered if it had been worked.
I have a 4" 629 with lock which I shoot and a "real" 4" 29 pinned and recessed (safe queen).

The 629-3/29-5 Classic was my favorite 44 to shoot. They've all been accurate and reasonably pleasant to fire. (the 629-4/29-6 Classic was next on my list)

I bought mine used in a pawn shop about 10 years ago. I liked it so much that I bought one for each of my sons. Nice balance, enough weight to handle the .44 mag and good looks. What's not to like.

That looks ready to hunt! Nice setup.
Thinking of doing the same thing with one of my Classics.
