Default Need Input, best Idea gets a free "PLUG"

I just picked up a 619 off the net, I will get it mid month.
I'm going to replace the barrel on it and a little custom work. Here is the Question, what would you do to it if it were yours. First it will get a plug, then what?

What's your intended purpose for the gun? What barrel length are you putting on it?

It can be a 4 inch or a 3 would be nice, I was thinking about a one of a kind gun.

Default One-of-a-kind 619

Bullseye,
Clearly it won't be one-of-a-kind with the 4", because it comes that way. It'll be similar to a 65 with a 3" bbl., but still unique as a 7-shooter. Also, very handy. Might want to bob or semi-bob the hammer, put some boot grips on it (Spegels, Eagles, or Ahrends), and maybe smooth and radius the trigger. Basically, an ultimate carry .357. Look forward to seeing what you come up with.

How about a 3" full lug barrel with a gold bead front sight with some of executioner's full bark stag grips? Or you can get a 5 shot 44 special cylinder and a 3" 44 barrel and have a 699!

I like this idea John, sound pretty cool. Do they still use that term?

If it were mine, and intended for serious social work, I'd do the following.
Smooth out the action and timing, until it indexes well using double action. Bob the hammer, and put a night sight on the front of the barrel that has been cut down to 3". I would NOT have it magnaported...try firing one of those inside a closed car sometime! Smooth the trigger face if not already smooth, and dehorn the outside surfaces. Have the cylinder chamfered professionally, and get a good set of wooden "secret service" style grips that fit your hand. I'd bead blast it to minimize reflectivity, and find a good holster and belt to finish making it a viable system.

My first thoughts on a premier defensive handgun. And if I win the lock plug, please give it to somebody else. I won't own a Smith with a lock in it. Thanks!!

I would make it a competition/carry gun. I would install a 4" full lug barrel from a 686. I really like the way the full lug barrels look and point and I find that they are not too heavy for concealed carry. The front sight would be green encapsulated fiber optic with the flat (not round) top. I believe Hi-Viz makes one. The hammer spur should be removed but the full cock ability retained. You might never need to thumb cock it, but it's nice to be able to do so should the need arise for long range shooting. Though I'm generally not a fan of moonclipping rimmed cartridges, I see it as a necessary modification for a 7 or 8 shooter. If you have the machining skills, I believe TK Custom still includes instructions on how to machine the cylinder if you buy the moonclips from him. I am a fan of grooved triggers, so I'd install a grooved .265" trigger. The older triggers will fit the new guns. I would give it a "hard primer action job" so that it fires all commercial primers. I find the modern "crush fit Federal primer only" action jobs ridiculous. Since the gun would fire mostly .38 Special and occasionally .357 Magnum, I'd go with the Miculek grip which should not be too uncomfortable for the odd Magnum load. This is a revolver which would be just as useful at a match as it would be on the street.

For a one of a kind, I'd get a 4" barrel and have it cut to 3 1/2". Custom 25% coverage engraving. Exotic wood grips in a finger groove boot grip style. Have the barrel recessed target crowned. Bevel the chamber mouth's. Smooth the face of the trigger. Trigger job, but do not reduce mainspring.

Fluted bull barrel if possible. Have you ever seen an fluted barrel on a S&W revolver? I haven't. I just think that would be so cool.

Hmm...if it were my gun, I'd probably go with:

-matte/bead-blasted finish (getting kinda tired of all the satin/brushed stainless guns in my collection)
-5", no-lug barrel, dovetail cut for a ramp front sight (I dunno, get a 6" 686 barrel and cut off all the extra bits?)
-have the forcing cone dressed up (Taylor Throating?)
-Ahrends Tactical finger-groove grips
-"Combat" .312 smooth-face forged trigger installed
-trigger job for a crisp SA break and a smooth DA pull
-cut the cylinder/extractor for a moon-clip
-chamfer the charge holes

Then find/make a decent holster for it. That's it, probably.

Since I'm spending your money...

4" 686 barrel, milled to half lug (and maybe flattened on the sides if you like that sort of thing)
cut forcing cone to 11 degrees and polish
square cylinder face
b/c gap @ .oo4
Lap barrel
dovetail ramp front sight w/ tritium dot
.312 smooth trigger
fastback hammer, no sa notch
extended firing pin
moonclip conversion
bevel front of cylinder
melonite finish
ebony Spegel boot grips

Zero for the 358429 HP over enough Ramshot Silhouette to drive it to 1100 fps (low flash and usually subsonic)

That would be a serious revolver.

That was fun, thanks!

Default 619 Custom

I like the 3" barrel, full lug with either a gold bead or fiber optic front sight dove-tailed into the barrel rib. I'd replace the cylinder with a 7-shot un-fluted 686 barrel. I think a slight melt treatment for the entire revolver with the chambers chamfered would be nice. I also like Ahrends or similar exotic wood grips for this one. As listed above, the forcing cone work would be a nice touch. As I know how much you enjoy doing your own smithing, I'd say a full trigger job and Wolff springs to your liking. If this is going to be a carry gun, stainless is nice, but a Melonite treatment from Coal Creek Armory would certainly protect it from the elements even further. I would keep the single action notch on the hammer.
