given what they're getting for a new one with a lock these days-I would not part with my 617-4 for less than $800

I agree with Phideaux's lawyer: you can't have mine for less than $800 -- and it's one of those new ones with the lock!

More seriously, given the current market, any 617 that still functions will likely cost you at least $600. They're excellent, cheap to shoot training mules for any mid-sized centerfire revolver. Be prepared to pay!

I Traded a 4" M617 No Dash for a 3" CS-1 M686 last Year..
The CS-1 was worth every bit of $800 IMO if not more..
I've seen alot of overpriced Smith 22lr revolvers lately & that's because You can actualy afford to shoot these things
I would love to have a J & K Frame 22 to add to my meager Smith harem..
Most used 617s I see are marked $700+ but those prices are always a bit negotiable with CASH..
Good Luck!!

My pusher has a brand new 4" 617, like mine bought there a year ago, for $679 + s/h + xfr - maybe $729. Add my Ahrends retro-targets, $66 w s/h, $43 for the HiViz SW617 sight, $56 for the speedloader, $15 for Wolff standard duty hammer spring & 13# trigger rebound spring, and $.48 (Home Depot) for the 6x32x.5" allen headed hardened SS set screw (Adjustable strain screw.), and some blue Loctite for securing that screw - $3. Ammo is on you, but new, that adds up to $912.48. Just the 4" 617 from the pusher - probably $680-$700 OTD.

It doesn't matter whether you get one with the IL or not - they will still be the most fun revolver you own - your deepest regret will be why did you wait so long!

I think the no lock 617 4" , is one, if not, the ,most desireable modern revolvers going.
I made an amazing deal on mine. I searched and searched for one with no avail. I broke down and bought one with the lock. The guy at the shop told me that he didn't care one way or the other about the lock and he had a brand new 617-4 4" 10 shot at home. I asked if he would trade and he said he didnt care. I asked him to draw me a map to his house and tell me what time he got off. The rest is history

Paying anywhere from $600 to $800 or possibly more is a great deal. The way I see it, 617's pay for themselves many times over. The first day I got my 4" 617, I shot it so much the first joint of my trigger finger was sore to the point that I could tell if I had shot it more I would have gotten a blister. I shot at least 400 rounds that day. If that had been 400 rounds of 9mm it would have cost me about $100 instead of the $10 for the .22LR. And the cost of 400 of any other calibers would have been much higher.

So actually they are priceless.

I paid $650 for this mint 4" 617 no dash with original factory combats earlier this year and considered it a very good deal. Before and since I have seen similar specimens sell in the $750 - $800 range.

New 617 4" are nearly impossible to find at the moment. Mine's been on order for 8 weeks and still none in sight. If you find a good one you want I'd say grab it if the price is anywhere near reasonable.

You can't go wrong with any of the prices you've seen here. Gave $500 for my 6"-1 last spring and consider I stole it!

Default Neat model

I've heard some opinionated folks reference certain "-4" models as being the best. I'm trying to buy into that. The 10-shot versus 6-shot comes up often, but I gravitate towards the 6 shot guns.... just seems right!!

What I'd like to know is what's better, the round butt or the square butt??????

While I'm at it, can anyone tell me why the factory short-changed these M617's and stamped them as M17's? They scrimped on the stainless as well, making these out of that old carbon steel material, wow what some companies will do to scrimp on product costs..... sheesh....

While not -4's, these M17-6 and M17-7 guns seem to shoot well too, but I favor the M17-7 for the newer rear sight assembly, it just looks right as well......

Like the mismarked and short changed M17's above, this old M617 was let out of the factory without it's underlugged barrel, I fear another victim of cost cutting.......

I might have to give up on S&W's and start collecting Taurus models, at least they put their lock where you can see them while shooting......

I sure like my RB Model 617. This one only has 6 little holes in the cylinder but shoots just fine!

I passed on a 4" NIB 617 two weeks ago for $615.00 because it had the lock and there was a 6" LNIB 17 right next to it for $500.00. The 17 came home with me then but, if the 617's are going for as much as you guys think, maybe I should go back and pick it up. The 17 is a great shooter but it's back at the factory already. It had mismatched serial numbers of all things........ a factory misstamp.

Here are a couple of my 617's. The first is a 617-4 10 shot with a 4" barrel and unfortunately it is NIB. I am having a hard time trying to talk myself into shooting it but I probably will. The second is a 617-1, 6 shot with a 6" that was LNIB when I got it. Love the 617's!

I found a 617 4 inch 10 shot a few months back in Florida and had that baby shipped to me in California quick time. One of the most fun guns I have ever had, hands down. Worth every penny I paid for it and gains value in my eyes every time I shoot it.

ladder13,

Mike - we think alike for a reason - I was born in Brooklyn - went to PS-9. I am a displaced NY-er!

Now, to you '6 is just right' folks, please reconsider. You have obviously never considered the prospect of a 'Zombie tree-rat attack'! Mindless erect-walking squirrels with their front paws held out - drooling, eyes glazed - they mean you no good. A ten-shooter is best.

Seriously, if I don't leave you with anything else, get a 17/18/617 sooner rather than later. They are that much fun.

Stainz
