Question collectors help!

I have two S&W 629-1. IN Blue Book of guns the M29-1 is listed at over three grand 100%, yet the 629-1 is only $750. Other than stainless, what's the diff that jacks the 29-1 two grand? Or, do I not understand S&W model numbering scheme?

You are talking about two completely different guns from a vintage standpoint. While these two models have been made in parallel since about 1978 (when the M629 was invented), the engineering changes do not track in either time, or actual changes. The M29-1 was made for a very short time, in the 1960 timeframe, and are very scarce.

Another way to look at it is this, in 1978, when the M629 was first produced, the M29 was in it's late -2 engineering change, getting ready to change to -3 (which roughly equates to how the M629 was introduced, non-recessed cylinders).

Generally speaking the rarity of -1 guns track to two digit model numbers (with exceptions), one needs to look at what models were actualy being made in the 1960 timeframe. Some two digit guns, like the M58 & M57 were invented later and don't fall into the mystique of the -1 guns.

Default thanks

Thanks for that explanation. Dissappointing to learn I have a $750 gun instead of a $3000 one but no big surprise. I knew the 29 was out longer, I didn't realize it was that long. thanks again smithnut.

Default Early 629s

The early 629s (no dash) were made in 6" with the pinned barrels and recessed cylinders! These guns also had an "N" serial prefix. In 1981 they introduced the 4" and 8 3/8" barrels and also started the non P&R guns. Also around the 1982 timeframe they went to the "ABCxxx" serial numbering system. The 629(no dash) guns are the ones which usually go for the $750 range.

Joe,

You are absolutely right of course.

The point is there were ~ 20 years between the M29-1 and the M629-1, the two engineering changes don't equate.

From a desireability standpoint, the very early M629's (P&R) are very interesting and desireable, but they aren't M29-1 interesting from a value standpoint.

Regards,
