is the M in the right place
picked up my new to me 686-1 4inch gun today. and it reads M-686-1. does this mean its was sent in to smith to be fix on the recall that was on these weapons?

Well, on mine, the M is stamped above the model number (M686-1) just above the "1".

If the revolver is not giving you any trouble, don't worry about the recall fix, unless you are using it as a duty or self defense weapon. The problem arose when using Federal .357 Magnum ammo. The primers were flowing back into the hammer nose bushing on the recoil plate and locking up the cylinder, preventing it from turning, and making it difficult to swing the cylinder out.

If you do send it in, DON'T be surprised if they do the work, but don't stamp the "M". That has happened to a couple of us here on the Forum.

M- Modified
It seems to me, since it already has an M, the modification has already been performed.
Your going to like your gun. It even gets smoother with use.

With the M stamp there, I would feel pretty sure that it has had the update. Smith may be able to tell you if it has had the update as they we had to report all serial numbers updated. They may have kept track of them.

called smith and gave them my serial # and they told me i was good to go.
