How common is inconsistant rifleing in a new S&W?
I ask because my new 640 Pro has one land that is not as strong or pronounced as the others. I've seen several pistols with a poor crown, but haven't noticed any rifleing differance.
Is it just hit or miss when it comes to a perfect barrel? I started my gun collecting with C&R rifles, and its MANDATORY to look at the bore and crown on those, in fact, its the first thing to look at.
I think some of the new stuff uses a chemical rifleing process. Anyway, I don't know whether to just deal with it, or send it back. I've posted a few times about this being a replacement for a 632. I'm getting tired of the hassle. So far, three out of four new S&W revolvers have had issues that I've not been happy with, and two out of three new Rugers.

My M&P15 5.56 SPORT Rifle had a barrel replaced after it could not hold groups of 8" at 25yds
Try shooting it at its nominal range, and compare it to others you have in your collection. If it shoots good, i'd keep it, if not you have something of a benchmark to talk to S&W about.
They replaced my barrel and paid for shipping, no charge.

That's really disheartening to hear. Kind of kicks hell out of the "any company can let a bad product slip by occasionally" argument. Unless you're one of those people who gets struck by lightning once a month.

Does the rifling appear to be offset to one side? Could it be the centerline of the barrel wasn't followed by the button they use. I'm not sure if they use a pilot on the button but if they do the wrong size pilot could be used so if the smaller sized pilot was used the rifling can be deeper on one side.

No, just has a weak land. Not as pronounced as the other three. I believe they use an electro chemical process to rifle barrels these days. Anyway, I e-mailed S&W and they said it was nothing to be concerned with.

I would shoot it and if it doesn't group right, send it back. Otherwise, I wouldn't give it a second thought.

I thought they used some kind of electrochemical rifling process, on all but their 22s. This process has been used since about 1993.

It looked to me like a poorly rifled barrel. I would clean it and clean it, and it looked like it was smooth and rough almost like it was a damascus type metal.
S&W replaced it with no problem.
