XVR scope mount coming loose
I just bought a Warne mount and rings for my 460 XVR partly because I saw them for sale on the S&W web site and figured if they're sellin um they must work, Plus I saw them used on a XVR in an article in Guns & Ammo on an Africa hunt. That being said, I just came from a gunsmith to have this setup installed on mine only to be told one of these he installed came off because the screws stripped out from the recoil on the first shot. His fix was to drill out and re-tap the holes to a larger screw and according to him that took care of the problem. Long story, I know, BUT I don't want my scope flyin off. Have any of you heard of this problem, or is this just a fluke?

I'm thinkin' the gunsmith is telling you a story to cover his stripping or breaking the screws on install. Most problems that come from recoil and scopes on the .460 is due to the scope moving in the rings. This is why many lapp the rings, use three rings instead of just two and use rosin beyween the rings and the scope.

I had a local precision machine shop put a Warne base on my S&W Model 29 (8 3/8" barrel). I INSISTED that he use 8-40 screws. 6-48 have little shear strength compared to 8-40's. I have fired my S&W at least 10,000 .44 magnum rounds since then without a single bit of trouble. In my considered opinion, 6-48 screws are an invention of the devil. When you figure the diameter at the base of the threads, there is practically nothing there. Use 8-40 screws for insurance.
