Default 629-6 troubles

I purchased a LNIB S&W 629-6 about 5 years ago to hunt with. I'm a former firearms instructor with a large Dept and attended several schools in the 80's under John Contro and Steve Murray of S&W armouers school. I only fired the revolver about 50 times before I had health problems and had to for go the handgun hunting idea. I sold the gun on this day of 10/24/09 to a local man. He called me at around 8:00 pm to tell me that while he was looking over the gun he tilted it up and the firing pin and a spring fell out. Is this possible with the frame mounted firing pin system. As all my training was on the hammer nose pin system I told him I would do some research and call him back. What is going on with this revolver?

If you take the side plate off there is a pin that holds the firing pin in and the side plates holds it in. This pin has been know to fall out, If you never took the side plate off your buddy lost it, it is more to mail a new one than the cost of the pin.

I never removed the side plate so maybe he did or the gun fairy did it. If he did remove it I hope he was instructed on the proper way. I would cringe when someone brought me a S&W with pry marks on the lower side of the side plate. Thanks a bunch for the quick reply and your schematic which makes it all clear.

OMG! It's another case of the Infernal Locque Fairey having his way with the unsuspecting revolver. It obviously vaporized the firing pin retaining pin, causing the spring to shove the fp out when the poor chap next held the revolver, in proper 'gangsta' style, with the muzzle rolled over and up as he cocked it or shot it DA. The insidious and dreaded IL at work!

Seriously, someone had to have the sideplate off and pulled that retaining pin out. Usually the friction of the fp's limit notch bearing on said pin keeps it from falling out. As said, an easy fix - especially if you find the pin.
