Wow, this thread's been around a while! The professional way to determine the appropriate handgun for general purpose police issue is to first carefully evaluate and document the officers needs. What kinds of contacts are the norm? What type of weapons are taken from people arrested by officers?

Once an evaluation of the data is made then an administrator can determine which weapon type should those under them be equipped with.

Or, he could have some cop tell him what's popular these days in the gun mags and get some of them.....

This may be slightly off topic...a LGS here in Philly has for sale a new S&W 686 chambered for 38 cal. only. When I asked about it the clerk said that it was a special run for some LE agency. They are asking a premium price for it.

Rich's post made me laugh.
How do issue weapons get chosen ? :

1. This is what we've been using , we're more or less OK with it , so we'll stick with same basic platform give or take the cal , or minor bbl length differences.

2. What do the Agencies nearby use ? We don't want to be different and/or keep up with the Jonses.

3. What do large trend setting regional or national agencies use? We want to seem cutting edge to impress other local Agencies.

4 . The Personal favorite of the lead Armorer / lead Instructor / percieved main gun guy of the Agency. Usually a good thing unless they have really strange tastes.

5. What brand is represented by the Chief/ purchasing guy's brother in law

6. And sometimes the proverbial Low Bidder.

The last time I saw an Aux. NH State Trooper he had a 686 on hs belt. Within a year or so. I made a comment about it to him and had a good 3 or 4 minute talk about the gun and the caliber.

Since my previous post in this thread , I've been shocked ! A large-ish County PD ( nearly 2,000 pistol order) has just become the first to adopt FNS LS ! Indirect sources indicate substantially lower price was major factor.

Just speculating , but there is the phenominum of the very first Dept gets steeply discounted ( and one example totally free ) pistols to be the first , and then are heavily featured in advertising ( ie XYZ PD uses our new and improved MegaBlaster , you should too ! ) aimed at both other PDs and the public.

I was actually quite surprised to notice cops on the board walk all carrying revolvers just this summer. Then I came across this thread. It actually seem rather quaint in these times of "Policeman as warriors".

Just saw a holstered revolver when I walked into the IRS office... had to get a highway tax stamp for my family to register a commercial truck. Was actually shocked to see that.

Where would I look to buy 70s model 10s maybe ex police gun ? Or would I be better off getting a newer classic from smith and Wesson?

Bud's Gun Shop in Kentucky should still have some at $319. They are probably from late 80's- 90's. I had 1 from them that was a 10-8 (1988) Australian police. Was not much for pretty, but functioned well. Bob

Although the Model 10 may be a nice, well fitted revolver, any police dept or private security contractor who issues any .38 Spl is run by clueless morons.

No 38 Spl, even with +P ammo, is nearly equal in performance to a comparable +P 9mm round. Combined with more limited round capacity when compared with popular semis, it is simply a bad choice.

I like both semis and revolvers and carry either a Ruger SR9C or SP101 with hot .357s for CCW. The SP wouldn't be my choice for a duty carry gun though. Don

The detailed accounts I've read pointed extremely poor planning and tactics . The agents knew full well they were going up against at least a Mini 14 and probably a similar long gun on the other guy. More importantly, given the history of the two killers, it didn't take a mastermind to predict a firefight would ensue.

This wasn't a jerk water depression-era PD facing the Barrow gang, but the country's premier law enforcement agency. Every agent should have been armed with an M4 (or whatever the carbine version of the AR15 was then.)

IMO, the FBI blamed the sidearms to conceal the incompetence of the agents in charge.

It's worth adding that it was a Model 10 that finally did in the two killers and ended the fight. IIRC, they had already received what would have been fatal wounds from 9mms, but went on to shoot several agents after being hit.

So the 9mm was made the goat and the great jello trials were launched, resulting in the .40 S&W,

Many agencies still allow revolver carry but they are privately owned. I have seen several K frame magnums, a Colt Trooper, and two S&W N frames in LE use in my area. I still carry a wheelgun sometimes and always have a j frame snub for a backup. I do have a M10 and have thought about carrying it just because they are such a nice/light/accurate weapon.
Would be fine for off duty.

Most officers now tend to believe the revolver just doesn't
hold enough ammo to be offensive against today's brand of
turds, but cops have been facing full auto with revolvers
for years. Honestly, I doubt I will carry my wheelgun much
longer even though I really like it and am good enough
with it. 6 in the gun, 12 on the belt, and boxes in the car
is not all that much or fast. Revolvers are just so classic and reliable
though.

The 1986 Miami shootout spelled the end for wheelguns and 9mm
though. Those agents had a few 9mms but mostly revolvers with few speedloaders and boxes of ammo. A revolver loaded with Win SuperX 158 +P LSWCHP ended the fight, but most of those agents had revovlers up against a Mini 14/other long guns. It was interesting though that the revolver shooters aimed while the auto users sprayed and prayed. You cant spray and pray with a wheelgun or you will be in serious trouble.

I do think that Mexico and some foreign countries still issue
the M10 and probably with RNL ammo too.
9mm didn't stay dead. Bullet technology improved significantly to the point where there is little difference in tissue disruption between 9mm, .40S&W and .45 ACP. My department issues Glocks in 9mm and our OIS statistics are quite good.

NY state corrections still carries model 10's for the most part. During a recent manhunt for a couple escapees there were plenty of docs officers pictures carrying revolvers. I do occasional work at a local county hospital and frequently treat inmates. All the prisoner transport guys are carrying model 10's. While at ground zero in 2001 ( military response team- we were orders to come unarmed!) there was still a fair mix of revolvers and autos with the nypd guys we worked with. Hard to believe that was 14 years ago!

Walking around town today, I only saw one Model 10 and all the rest were Glocks and CZ's. I believe that a new purchase of sidearms is being made and that they'll be more G-17's. There is talk of arming the Traffic Police -- should they want to be armed -- and giving them the Model 10's. That is not definite but is being discussed and I know about it because the revolver training would be done on our gunrange by our Club members I suspect. Why else would they tell me?

Issue loads here would be the 124 grain Aguila JRN in 9 m.m. and in .38 Special the most common would be the Aguila 130 grain FMJ loading although if an officer bought his own (most unlikely) he could obtain the Aguila 158 grain RNL through the local sporting goods store.

Although you need to have a registered sidearm to buy ammo here in Mexico (and be able to prove it with your registration permit), Police Officers who are "known" are often sold ammo and then the purchase is accredited to someone else who actually has a permit (like me, for instance)*.

Police sidearms are registered to the Department as part of a "lot" and are not registered to the Officer who has to draw his sidearm when he comes on duty and turn it back in when he (or she) goes off duty. Rarely would the same sidearm be drawn. The system is so bad that I believe no comment is necessary as all of you are completely capable of seeing all the downsides to this amount of draconian control.

All semi-autos are carried in Condition 3. There are still not enough sidearms to go around as the department is growing under the new administration (the old administration appears to have sold-off some of the firearms and perhaps pocketed the money?) and today I saw a North American Woman with her leashed poodle beratting an Officer for walking the main streets with a Semi-Auto M-4 style rifle. He obviously couldn't understand a word she was saying as she blabbered away in English about how bad the image of an Officer armed with an Assault Rifle in quaint little San Miguel presented to the tourists. He stood there, obviously mystified as to what the heck was going on as she naively complained to a man whose empty holster might have indicated to a thinking person that he had the rifle because it was that or nothing.

I did not know the officer, he had to be one of the new ones so I did not even bother to intervene. Besides, I've already learned about the dangers of coming between silly Gringas and their poodles and their immediate access to Social Media. Perhaps I should have, but I doubt she'll be here long anyway. The Poodle crowd never lasts but they do keep replacing themselves.

*The girls in the Deportes Aces ask the older, well-known Club members if it's okay to now-and-then sell a box of shells to Police Officers under our permits. My opinion is, they'll probably do it anyway, so I just tell them to go ahead. The level of local forensics is like they'll ask "me or one of the other guys what kind of bullet it that?" Nobody writes down lot numbers or stuff like that, they just "tick off" a box of shells sold to so-and-so. In theory, only 200 shells a month can be accredited to any one registration but all of us turn in all of our registrations (and most of us actually reload anyway) so that's a few thousand shells a month that can float around out there to help the cause -- or not.

My personal opinion is that trying to control objects is a waste of time. If "they" could account for all the nuclear bombs ever made, I'd maybe have more faith in the idea but they can't so trying to control bullet-purchases is just insane. In my opinion.

I suspect that the reason you see security types with revolvers is because for most security guards, they have to carry what the company issues and not their personal piece. You got a security company with 300 guys, you need to buy 300 guns. You buy police trade-in revolvers on the cheap and that is how you arm your people.

When I was going to the VA in the late 1990's all the private security guards in the VA carried revolvers. My MOS being what it was (2111-Armorer/Small Arms Repair) and me being, well, me, I examined a few of them rather closely. Quite a number had RHKP markings, indicating they had been picked up by the security company on the surplus market.

Best,
RM Vivas
