Default Opinions, most desirable stainless S&W?

Just wanted to get some opinions on what you think is S&W's most desirable from a collectible standpoint stainless revolver? I realize that this actually transcends the time frame of this particular forum but since most fall into this time frame I figured I'd post it here. Tough choice really, an early model 66, 629 no dash, 627 model of 89, CS1? What do you folks think?

Default Favorite stainless Smith?

You cannot ask that question. Forced to choose ,my brain would implode.

As far as the most collectible ,that would be the scarcest. Like the 4" 629 no dash. or the 627-0 as you mentioned. Any first run ,624 ,610 ,627, these will only increase in value and collectibility.

Any 625 would be a favorite G frame.(pg. 170 S.c.S.W.3) Be it 45 Colt ,or 45 A.C.P.

But I have become nuts for almost any F 357 these days ,particularly the 3" model 66 and 65.

The X frame has only been produced in stainless, ANY 460, is a out and out winner in my book.

I have to rest now, my head hurts , Regards AlleN-Frame

I can think of quite a few that are getting tough to find, or expensive. Disregarding PC guns, I'll go with:
629 no dashes, and 696s are popular lately.
940s, 631s, 646s (the frame is stainless) are getting up there.

Then there are the unusual variations due to barrel length or special order status. These can be extremely desirable to someone who needs to fill a hole in their collection.
Ones that come immediately to mind are:
3" Model 66
4" Model 657
2" Model 651
5" Model 610
Model 686+ and 625 45 ACP prelock Mountain Guns
no lug Model 617s

I'm sure there's still a bunch that I've missed.

In my experience the 4" no dash 657s are far scarcer than 4" no dash 629s, yet the 629s are the ones that everyone talks about. Desirability is a much bigger factor than scarcity.

It seems like the most valuable would be one of the original Model 60s or the stainless 15s (at least I believe they were stainless 15s) they did as prototypes a few years before the 60 was introduced.

Good call. I forgot about the 1st 40 high polish Model 60s. I give this one my vote also.

My hunch is that at some point the 686-4 plus will be a hot ticket. It's all the best features in a 686. Forged lockwork, CNC machined, seven shot and no Hillary hole. No other variant has all those features. People just haven't caught on yet.

Ignoring prototypes, and limited editions I think a 625-3 3" is about the most expensive "normal production" stainless S&W I have seen. They seem to regularly bring $1200-$1500 on GB. I can't think of anything else bringing that much.

Oh wait....How about the Bloodwork M627's? I guess they were a limited run, so more valuable.

I've seen them sell between 2K-3K. I don't know if it's the most desirable, but they seem to be about the most expensive.

My 'Holey Grail' of S&W's has eight through 'holes' in the cylinder - and a snub nose... the 627 'Bloodwork' gun. Just a pipe dream...

My two 'most desirable' range bag/safe mates are my JM PC627 V-Comp and my bought-new 696-1.

Stainz

PS I even called the PC Shop - said I'd buy another 627 Pro and send it to them to fit a snub barrel, just to be told nothing was available to fit it. Sigh. No, I don't want the snubby 327NG...

I know the 696 is a pretty hot ticket, so isn't the bloodwork gun.

Bought a brand new 696-0 in 1997, for 359.00...........Now, they are going for 800.00 +. A "good investment" from my point of view, and I believe they are still a very popular must have. Shop "lucky", and you can pick one up for less than 800.00. I am not a collector, but, I dont "use" this gun. It just sits in the dresser drawer, remains perfect, and gains value.

I'm pretty new to the gig and I love my 6" 686, but I'm wanting a 2-1/2" 686 in the worst way!

I'm gonna take a stab and say a 2.5" 686-4 in 7 shot. With an added plus if it has the old style latch.

Or a 629-4 Mountain gun

Or a 681

Or a 63 no dash

Or a 617-4 10 shot in a 4" barrell

These would make a very desireable representative collection of different frame sizes and an impressive start to a good collection.

Excellent replies folks, brought up some that I never even thought of. If I had to choose I have to agree the 3" 625's seem to really bring big bucks followed by 629 no dashes. I had a chance at a 696 back in the late 90's, it languished as a rental gun that was never shot at the local range. Asking price? $275, in all of my wisdom I said "no thanks", so dense sometimes it was just a 44 speical afterall. Little did I know then...

The only stainless revolvers I've ever owned are 610's. Here's the only one I still have....

A good thread, and some very impressive photos. My thoughts:

For historical value: high polish early model 60 (the first SS revolver)
For rarity and collector interest: model 627 Blood Work
For sheer impressiveness: the 12" 460 XVR or 10.5" 500 X-frame, compensated (bipod optional)
For collecting and using (not so rare so that a little shooting will damage its value): 3" model 66

For me , the very best and most used are my K and L frame 3" models in 38/357 . No other handgun ( at least for me) offers the versatility that they do. I have 2 three inch 65's , a 3" model 66 and a 3" model 686 CS-1. My Jovino 629-1 Effector would be a close second.

Best to me is the 624 with a 4" barrel. Not as delicate a finish of a regular blued model 24.

That's an easy question, when the 500 was introduced, everybody had to have one!
Same when the Dirty Harry movie came out the 29-2 was the must have.
I 'd figure "the must have" is a temporary fad. I like nearly all of them as long as they make big holes and shoot straight!

Not counting Performance Center guns, I would have to say that the 3 inch model 66 and the 696 are towards the top of the list.

I'm sure that there are those who will think that I'm weird and not fit for mixed company as I have yet to gravitate to the N frames, but the one gun that I have lusted over for many years since I first saw one is the 3" Model 66 as produced for and sold by Ashland back in the mid '80's. That is to me the epitome of the K frame revolver. A close second would be the Model 940, or preferably a model 60 fitted with a 940 barrel and cylinder assembly as I prefer exposed hammers, followed by the Model 651 with both cylinders. That would have me covered in .22LR, .22Mag, .38 Spl., .357Mag, and 9mm. The only N frames I would be remotely interested in would be a 4" 627 8-shot and a 4" 625 in 45ACP. -Ed.

Default Short barrels are my favorites...

I'd buy all of the 3 inch model 66s I could find. So far I have only found one:

I'm also very fond of the 2.5 inch model 686, although these are more numerous. I just like their looks:

Default The "Little" caliber stainless

With the cost of ammo now days, I have been looking at model 34's. I never thought I would find one of these........until I happened to find this in a pawn shop yesterday.

Stainless 63-3

New guy here with my first entry.

686-3 Classic Hunter 357. Only 5000 made in 1988.

M&P R8. Ugly but it's a shooter.

Default I'd say these 3...

in this order:

657 No Dash in 4"

629 No Dash in 4"

66-3 in 3"

The 657 and 629 will be with me until the end. The 66 I'm keeping for trade fodder. No some reason, I enjoy a 2.5" 66 better. I know that isn't a popular opinion, but then again I'm odd.

I'd have to go with the stainless gun that started it all, a Model 60 from the very first batch:

Cush, I have to respectfully disagree with you on this.

Here is how it should go:

1) Model 60 first run. The one that started it all. (still looking)

2) 617 no dash, no lug

3) 657 no dash, 4"

4) 629 no dash, 4"

5) 686+ -5, Mountain Gun

6) 625-6 45 ACP, Mountain Gun

7) 631, 4"
