New 627 Pro Pics
Finally got my new 627 Pro fixed up to my liking:
I've removed the dreaded lock and installed a plug from John..
Ya can load eight rounds at a time with the moon clips:
I swapped the stock RR/WO sights for a HiViz fiber optic front and a V-notch rear.
And last, but not least, the Ahrends Retro Combats
Oh, yeah, and the recessed crown
,
In addition, I've install a spring kit, smoothed some of the innards, and redone the trigger stop, which was useless as it came from the factory.

Very nice. What's the purpose of the recessed crown?

I've been looking at Ahrends Grips & talking to Kim there. What is the particular "wood" on your grips ? They're great looking.

Love the grips! Are those the round to square conversions or something different?

It shoots very nicely, thank you. I haven't had an opportunity to try any differnt loads yet. I expect it will shoot as well or better than any of my Smith revolvers.
I don't know the exact purpose of the recessed crown, but S&W seems to be using this design on the Pro's and PC guns. Obviously it protects the rifling, but if it serves any other purpose I could not say.
The grips are cocobolo. They are a square to round conversion, and I believe are called Retro Combat style. I believe this is the same style some of the factory guns have come with.

I also have a 627 Pro and love it. Yours is the first S&W that I have seen with the Ahrends Retro Combat grips. How do you like them? I have been thinking of getting some of these myself. Also, could you post larger pictures with more detail?

I'll try a larger pic. When I posted these, I kept getting an error message indicating the address had more than 25 characters and could not be posted. Finally they went through, but in small size.
Well, it's still small. Maybe I can take another pic tomorrow just of the grips and try posting.

a recessed crown is usually used to protect the end of the barrel rifleing. If you nick the front of a barrel on the rifleing, it can really screw up accuracy. (something tells me I misspelled rifleing)

The crown is, of course, to protect the rifling. The question no one seems to be able to answer so far is, "Why the recessed crown?", versus the usual rolled profile crown at the muzzle. The recess does put the rifling further out of harm's way, but I wonder if there is anything more to it than that.

It is easier to machine the recess than the belled profile. The recess is just done similar to counterboring any other hole, and would be cheaper and easier even with the CAD-CAM systems. I prefer the looks of the counterbored recess too, but that is just a personal thing.
Just a guess however.

Yeah, I sort of like the look, too. I took a closer look at my 686 and it doesn't have the rounded contour of the tapered barrels, but ratger is simply flat with a beveled crown. Not nearly as well protected as the 627.
